A CHICK has hatched at Charles Read Academy, just in time for Easter.

The new arrival hatched in the Corby Glen school’s three-egg incubator, which aims to help pupils with their studies of reproduction as part of the science curriculum.

Members of the newly set up Growing Club will be responsible for caring for the little chick, as well as for growing crops in the school’s raised beds.

Judith Jagger is the co-ordinator of the rural dimension, in which pupils learn about the care of farm animals.

She said: “Many of our students have never had the opportunity to experience the miracle of new life emerging first-hand and we hope that this new initiative will inspire them to consider careers in land-based industries that are very relevant to our location.”

In September, the school hopes to offer an animal care course to Key Stage 4 students and this is the first step in that process.

Pupils are kept informed of the chick’s progresson a weekly basis by e-mail and video.
