A couple celebrated their diamond wedding yesterday (Thursday), 60 years after being married in St Wulfram’s Church in Grantham.

Clive and Pearl Jeffery, of Grantham Road, Great Gonerby, made an unusual diversion on their wedding day when they visited Pearl’s grandmother in Grantham Hospital before going on to their reception at the Earlesfield Hotel, now the Priory pub in Dysart Road. A picture of the wedding party in the hospital was featured on the front page of the Journal.

Clive, 83, and Pearl, 82, met when they were both members of Earlesfield Youth Club and the Aces Cycling Club.

Clive served an apprenticeship with Aveling Barford before his National Service. He later became sales manager, travelling all over the world. The couple lived in Tehran, in Iran, for five years. He retired after 43 years with the firm.

Pearl, who was born in Billingborough, has worked for the Co-op in Grantham, as an usherette at the State Cinema, and also at Aveling Barford.

The couple have two daughters, five grandchildren and one great-grandson.

They both enjoy gardening and grow their own fruit and vegetables. They also enjoy Country and Western music.
