Magistrates spared a woman jail after she stole electrical items from Currys in Grantham while subject of a suspended prison sentence.

Kerry Askew of Uplands Drive in Grantham received a 16-week prison sentence suspended for 18 months in 2012.

On February 11 of this year she stole a Playstation and headphones worth £261.96 from Currys in Grantham. Askew denied the charge but was found guilty at trial.

Rob Arthur, defending, said Askew has been a “very heavy drug user for a substantial number of years, starting when she was 18”. She is now 32.

Mr Arthur argued Askew should not be sent to prison as she had just started to make progress tackling her drug addiction.

He added: “It has been a very rocky road for Miss Askew. She has been to prison several times to my knowledge, all for the same type of offending.”

Magistrates decided against sending Askew to prison.

Askew was sentenced to 10 weeks in prison suspended for six months. She must also pay an £80 surcharge but was spared costs of almost £200 because of limited means.

Chair of magistrates Malcolm Hall said: “We are impressed collectively with your progress. Keep it up and hopefully the suspended sentence order will not be activated.”
