Grantham & District Saturday League
Memorial Cup Final
Whie Swan Barrowby 3
CK Dons 1
Swans successfully retained the Memorial Cup on Saturday, a trophy which they have won for the last three years.
Both teams started a little nervously and cancelled each other out for large parts of the first half. Chances were at a premium but CK Dons went close when a fierce drive flashed past the post to the relief of Flavell in the Barrowby goal.
Conditions took a turn for the worse with a torrential downpour that continued up to the half time break.
The second half saw Barrowby step up a gear, with Clarke starting to dictate play from central midfield.
The Swans managed to capitalise on the sustained pressure when a corner was whipped over to find the charging Leigh Radford who connected to power a header through the crowded box and into the net.
This was just the boost Barrowby needed and the goal cushion allowed them to relax and play free flowing football.
This was reflected in the second goal when a great team move ended with Clark threading a beautifully weighted pass to Radford who timed his run to perfection to clip a first time shot over the advancing CK Dons keeper.
The Barrowby back four of Willis, Jones, Walmsley and O’Callaghan formed an impenetrable defence and rarely looked troubled throughout the second half.
Any hopes of a CK Dons comeback were shattered when the tireless Radford ran on to a loose ball to go one-on-one with the keeper and prodded the ball under his body and into the empty net.
Barrowby comfortably saw the game out and the final whistle went to see the Swans lift their second trophy of the season.
Barrowby’s man of the match was Leigh Radford.
Barrowby manager Paul Milne thanked their season’s team sponsors Grantham Honda, Bloomsbury Bakery, SprayTech and The White Swan public house, Barrowby.
