Grantham Amateur Boxing Club enjoyed a very successful weekend – with three consecutive victories – and has a show on in town tonight (Saturday).

The success saga began last Thursday when head coach Dean Fardell took 22-year-old heavyweight Lee Chappell for his third bout against M. Kamran at Walsall FC.

Lee dominated the fight, catching Kamran with jabs to the nose in the first round as his opponent searched in vain for a big shot.

Kamran was given a standing eight count in the second round but came stronger in the final round, however it was too little too late and the judges awarded the fight to Lee by a unanimous decision.

Lee’s third win should set him up for some tougher opponents. Coach Dean said: “He has had a good season and is going to meet some good lads now.”

Welterweight Terry Bennett faced the experienced M. Ali at Pontefract on Friday.

Terry used his jabs nicely in the first round against the very aggressive Ali, in front of a partisan crowd. He kept jabbing and throwing some useful combinations, but tired slightly in the the final round. The judges awarded Terry the bout by a 2-1 decision.

Dean said Terry had done very well: “He’s had an up and down season and hadn’t had a bout for a couple of months.”

Light-middleweight Nathan Wallace represented East Midlands Select against the Army’s Sean Cohoon at Clifton Miners Welfare on Saturday.

Nathan utilised crisp combinations and strong backhands to rock his opponent in the opening round.

The Grantham man lost control of the fight somewhat in the second round, with Cohoon regaining composure, but Nathan was never in danger and dominated the final round with shots to the body to take a 2-1 points win.

Dean said: “Cohoon was a mauler. He couldn’t take Nathan’s power.”

+ All of Grantham ABC’s boxers should be in action at its show at The Meres tonight, when Nathan Wallace will contest the vacant Midlands Central Area title against John Pickering of Buxton.

Dean said: “Nathan is a big star. People will be coming from far and wide. It’s great to have boxing back in town.”

Admission is £10 adults, £5 children, with ringside tables also available. For information call Dean on 07831 500278.
