NETBALL: Grantham lose out in final round of competition

Last Sunday saw the final of a series of Back to Netball Tournaments hosted by Lincolnshire Netball in Grantham at The Meres leisure centre.

Once again the competition came down to the final round with only two points separting the top two teams – Newark and Grantham.

Grantham had not lost a game to Newark in the last two tournaments, but this time the Nottinghamshire team pipped them by a single point.

l Following on from their previous week’s success at becoming Lincolnshire county under-14 champions, Fenland Meerkats travelled to Corby for the regional leg of the competition. The top two teams from Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Lincs and Northamptonshire all met for a Round Robin competition to see who would go through to the Nationals.

The first game saw the team meet Corby. After a nervous shaky start, the girls found their rhythm. Shooters Jade and Issy battled with the wind to score, taking the first match 8-4.

Fenland went on to win five matches, draw one and lose three, giving the Grantham club their highest result this year, fifth in the East Midlands. The team comprised Georgia Key, Giorgia Bosworth, Jade Potter, Sian Jolly, Issy Hose, Katie Weatherstone, Rose Bitowt, Maddie Gore, Kate Davis and Emily Broad.
