This week, we look at physiotherapy as a service offered at Grantham Hospice.

This feature is the third in a series we are running on the lead up to the launch of the hospice’s ‘£1 in a Pot’ campaign, which aims to raise money for day therapy services.

Improving quality of life is the main aim of St Barnabas Hospice physiotherapist Lynsey Green.

Lynsey joined the day therapy south team at Grantham in June this year, and in that time has made a difference to dozens of patients’ lives.

She said: “My role is to maximise patient’s mobility and function to improve their quality of life.”

Lynsey will carry out an initial assessment with a patient in which she will identify the problems causing the reduction in function. Following that, she will come up with an individually-tailored treatment plan.

She said: “This might include exercise, specific physiotherapy treatments as well as falls prevention advice, or breathlessness clinics. I can also order mobility equipment for patients, such as walking sticks or frames.”

St Barnabas Hospice also offers a lymphoedema service – this is a treatment programme for people suffering from swellings, often of a limb, which can occur as a result of cancer treatments.

Lynsey said: “I wanted to work for St Barnabas because I knew it would be a challenging and rewarding environment. The role encompasses work in all aspects of physiotherapy such as neurology, respiratory and musculo-skeletal treatments. It is chance to use all my skills.”

But it is not just patients who can benefit. Lynsey can advise carers on moving and handling.

Lynsey has had several success stories since joining St Barnabas.

She said: “There was one man who hadn’t walked unaided for years. He came to see me and after two sessions he was able to walk 25 metres alone, with no help and no walking frame. It was an emotional experience for all concerned.”

Lynsey said: “The thing I most enjoy is seeing the difference in people and patients seem so appreciative. I’m lucky enough to be able to spend time with the patients in an environment where I am not rushed. Little gains can make such a big difference to someone’s life.”

Day therapy is a service for anyone over the age of 18 with a life-limiting condition or uncertain diagnosis. Physiotherapy is just one of the many treatments and therapies on offer. To find out more, call 01475 513545 or drop into the hospice in Barrowby Road, Grantham.
