Alcohol was blamed for causing a man to commit eight separate thefts of booze from shops around Grantham.

Carl Jackson of Harrowby Road in Grantham admitted the eight shop thefts as well as two public order offences after threatening shop assistants.

Jackson targeted six different Grantham stores: the Spar shop in Bridge End Road, the Jet service station in Manthorpe Road, Your Local Supermarket in London Road, Bargain Booze in Westgate, The Local Family Store and the Co-op.

The court heard how Jackson walked into the Spar shop in Bridge End Road and called a member of staff a “spastic” after he was challenged while stealing alcohol.

Marie Stace, prosecuting, said: “He was asked to leave the store and replied ‘you are going to get it you little spastic. I know you are on your bike’.”

In his statement the victim said Jackson has made the same threat previously and it made him “worry he will carry out the threat and wait for me after work”.

The court also heard how Jackson asked a shop worker at the Co-op what time the shop closed after he was again challenged while stealing alcohol.

When told it was 10pm Jackson replied: “Well I will come back at 10pm with some friends and we will see who is funny then.”

Rob Arthur, defending, told the court “alcohol is the root of his problems”.

He said: “When things in his life have gone downhill he resorts to the one thing he knows to block these issues out, he turns to alcohol and we are left with these stories of offences, all effectively to get alcohol.”

Jackson was sentenced to 56 days in prison but as he had already served 28 days he was ordered to be released.
