A mother has spoken out after the hand-crafted Christmas decorations she put up for her disabled son were wrecked by a mindless vandal.

Gertie Garner of Belton Lane in Grantham woke on Tuesday to find one of the Santas she had made had been taken, decapitated and thrown across the main road.

But if the anti-social Grinch thought he had got away with his crime he is in for a surprise as his actions were recorded by a CCTV camera put up hours before the vandalism took place.

Mrs Garner said: “It was the first night we’d lit it all up. I do it every year for my son who is disabled because he loves lights.

“It was his carers who found out what had happened first when they came to get my son out of bed. A lot of people get a lot of enjoyment out of the decorations so I don’t see why they can’t just leave them alone.”

Mrs Garner put up the CCTV camera after years of vandalism. She said: “We used to put little ornaments on the wall put they kept getting stolen so we glued them instead but then they were smashed. The amount of people who stop and look at the decorations is unbelievable. People say we should do it for charity but where would people put the money? It would just disappear.”

The CCTV footage has been passed to the police.
