Court: Drugs were being prepared at a Westgate flat

Drugs were being prepared at the Westgate home of a 20-year-old woman, police officers discovered.

Danielle Keaveny, formerly of Westgate in Grantham but now living in St Rumbolds Street, Lincoln, admitted a charge of knowingly permitting or allowing to take place on the premises, the preparation of opium for smoking.

The court heard how police officers spotted a drug deal taking place in Stanton Street, Grantham. The officers made arrests and recovered eight wraps of heroin.

As a result, officers executed a search warrant at the home of Keaveny in Westgate where various drug paraphernalia was found.

In her interview Keaveny admitted using heroin and said she allowed her home to be used for the preparation of drugs in exchange for drugs.

Kate Hartley, prosecuting, said: “She gets a bag of heroin in return for letting her room be used.”

Two males have also been charged in relation to the incident.

Bill Fraser, defending, said the arrest has forced Keaveny to leave town.

He said: “She and her partner have moved out of Grantham to live in Lincoln because they were getting threats from other drug people in Grantham.”

Mr Fraser described Keaveny as “on the periphery of what was going on” and said she was not involved in the process of dealing the drugs.

Keaveny was also found to have breached a conditional discharge for stealing make-up from Boots.

The case was adjourned until February 11 for reports.

Ten-man Harrowby United lose by single goal after dominating match

ChromaSport United Counties League

Division One

Eynesbury Rovers 1

Harrowby United 0

Harrowby United endured a frustrating trip to St Neots, in Cambridgeshire, to face fourth-placed Eynesbury Rovers who ended the Arrows six-game unbeaten run.

Harrowby came away with a single goal defeat in a match they dominated for long periods, despite playing for an hour with 10 men after losing captain Simon Bolland to a straight red card after 31 minutes.

The Arrows started the game brightly and the home side were fortunate after only five minutes when Luke Peberdy, making his first start, was put through only to be brought down by home custodian Andrew Wale just outside the box. The keeper was lucky to escape with a yellow card and the resulting free kick from Sam Kirton was saved.

Just after the 10 minute mark, good work from Sam Weatherstone and Martin Wormall split the home defence to give Lee Shaw a clear run on goal. Shaw was unable to produce a finish, shooting straight at Wale’s legs.

After 22 minutes, the Arrows did have the ball in the net when a ball crossed in from the left by Kirton found Scott Webb who steered the ball home, only to be thwarted by the assistant referee’s flag for offside.

Things then took a turn for the worse for the visitors when skipper Bolland lunged into a tackle, arriving high and late. He was immediately given his marching orders by referee Mr Dunkley.

Harrowby continued to press, despite being a man down, and just before half time Wormall shot just over the bar.

Rovers looked to assert themselves early in the second half and Jack Drury, in the Harrowby goal, saved well with his feet only a minute after the restart.

Scott Webb came to Harrowby’s rescue after 66 minutes when he headed off the line following an Eynesbury corner.

The game’s only goal came after 76 six minutes. A ball into the Harrowby penalty area was only half cleared and from the ensuing scramble, it fell kindly to a prone James Freshwater who poked the ball home from inside the six-yard box.

Harrowby responded and Kirton had a shot deflected out for a corner.

With 10 minutes remaining, Arrows keeper Drury punched clear from a corner and was rewarded with a hefty challenge that required lengthy treatment. He carried on for another few minutes but had to be replaced by Sam Scothern between the sticks when it became evident he could not continue.

Having made all of their substitutions Harrowby were reduced to nine men when Shaw, chasing a through-ball, bravely challenged Wale. He came off second best and had to leave the field on a stretcher after suffering a knee injury.

In the 13 minutes of stoppage time, Bobby Lee had a long range effort well saved by Wale, and at the other end Scothern did likewise right at the end.

Harrowby United: Drury (Scothern, 86), Weatherstone (Lee, 79), Preston, Hill, Whyley, Webb, Bolland (c), Kirton, Peberdy (Sheridan, 36), Wormall, Shaw. Subs not used: Michniew, Mayes.

Court: Man drank vodka and slept in his car

Sleeping in his car after splitting from his wife almost cost a man his driving licence.

Brian Kelly of Ivatt Court in Grantham was spending his third night sleeping in his car in a lay-by in Pit Lane, Great Ponton, when he was spotted by the police.

Kelly had left his headlights on and had the engine running when a police officer approached the car.

Kate Hartley, prosecuting, said the officer was knocking on the window of the car for about two minutes until Kelly, who was “slumped over the steering wheel” finally came to.

The officer immediately noted the smell of alcohol on Kelly’s breath and the 47-year-old admitted he had been drinking vodka. Kelly, who admitted a charge of being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle, was found to be almost three times the drink-drive limit.

Chris Pye-Smith, defending, said Kelly would lose his job if he were banned from driving. He added: “He had no intention of driving his car that night.”

The court was told Kelly is now living with his daughter in Grantham.

Kelly was fined £420 and ordered to pay £42 in costs and an £85 surcharge. There will also be 10 points put on his licence.

Chair of magistrates Jane Tidswell said: “It means you are going to have to drive exceptionally carefully.”

However, the three men all deny a second charge of killing a deer without the consent of the owner.

Court: Heroin user told to ‘grow up’

Police arrested a man for possession of heroin after witnessing him leave the home of a known drug dealer in Grantham.

Police approached Ben Parker of Beverleys Avenue, Whatton, but he ran away. Parker was tracked via CCTV and seen to return to Hornsby Road and begin searching an area of grass in Hornsby Road.

Police suspected he had dropped the drugs in the area before they were picked up by an unknown person. They then suspected he met that person and recovered the drugs.

Police officers moved in again and caught Parker moments after he again dropped the drugs. Three wraps of heroin were recovered.

Parker, 27, told officers he bought the heroin for his own use. He said he uses two bags a day and has smoked heroin for eight years.

Chris Pye-Smith, defending, told the court Parker intends to give up heroin.

Parker admitted possession of a Class A drug. He was fined £110 and ordered to pay costs of £40 and a £20 surcharge.

Parker said he would only be able to pay the money back at £5 a week.

Chair of magistrates Jane Tidswell said: “It’s a mystery how you manage to use and pay for it when you have not got any money.

“It’s time you got yourself sorted out isn’t it? Grow up.”

Police are warning Mercedes Sprinter drivers in the Grantham area and 4x4 drivers in the Thurlby, Bourne and Market Deeping areas after a further spike in catalytic converter thefts.

Over the last four or five days cars in all of these areas have been targeted, but different criminals are stealing from different vehicles in different areas.

In Grantham the most popular targets are Mercedes Sprinter vans. Three have been hit since February 1 in Isaac Newton Way, Grantham, Harrowby Road, Grantham and Cliffe Road, Gonerby Hill Foot.

A lorry driver faces losing his job after being banned from driving for a year.

Paul Scott of Harrowby Road in Grantham was stopped by police after driving through a red light turning off Springfield Road into Harlaxton Road in Grantham.

The 44-year-old admitted to police he had drunk a couple of beers before getting behind the wheel. A test at the police station revealed Scott was over the drink-drive limit.

Rob Arthur, defending, told the court Scott had got behind the wheel after getting into an argument at home.

He added: “He got himself in a bit of a rage and drove away to calm down. He did not think he would be over the limit but he accepts he was over the limit.”

Mr Arthur told the court Scott had effectively lost his job when admitting the offence due to the mandatory driving ban.

Scott was fined £110 and ordered to pay a surcharge of £20.

He must also pay £85 in costs and was banned from driving for a year.

Court: Man threatened life of policeman and his family

Racist language was used by a man in the town centre who then threatened the life of the arresting police officer and his family.

Jason Smith of Hornsby Road in Grantham admitted using racially-aggravated words and assaulting a constable. The incidents arose after he was ejected from Vibe nightclub in Westgate, Grantham in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

A police officer headed to the club after hearing Smith shout at a bouncer: “F***ing p***s. I will f***ing kill you.”

Smith was going to be given an order banning him for a few hours from the town centre, but after a chief inspector arrived on the scene he began talking about his military background and announced: “I shoot f***ing p***s.”

Kate Hartley told the court that upon being arrested and transported away from the town centre Smith told the officers, “I shoot n*****s” while again making reference to his military background.

Smith continued to act aggressively, verbally abusing one particular officer who he said had pushed him.

He told the officer: “You are a f***ing faggot. I will f***ing kill you. I will bite your nose off.

“I will kill you, your girlfriend, your parents and your kids.”

When interviewed at Grantham police station Smith continued to make threats against the officer. He was asked if he would carry out the threat to attack the officer and he said he would.

Rory Macmillan, defending, said Smith was still under the influence of alcohol when he gave the interview.

Mr Macmillan added: “He apologises to the police for his behaviour and the language used and anyone who heard what he said.”

Mr Macmillan said Smith could not explain why he used the language he did. He added: “He says he is not racial and has never been involved in any racial incidents.”

Smith was fined £110 for using racially-aggravated language and £75 for a non-contact assault on a police constable. He must pay £85 in costs and a £20 surcharge.

Grantham care home receives quality award

A care home in Grantham is celebrating 25 years with a second special award for the quality of its work.

Harrowby Lodge, on Harrowby Road, Grantham, has been awarded a Gold Standards Framework Award, commend status, three years after it was first recognised for the excellent way in which it cares for its residents in the final months of their lives.

The home was opened in 1987 by sisters Sue Smith and Julie Neville who say the home is almost unique in that it is still a family business and not part of a larger company.

Sue said: “Harrowby Lodge opened its doors in November 1987 with 16 beds and 32 staff. Today we have 30 beds and over 60 staff.

“During our time we have seen many changes, and, we, like many others are governed by paperwork. In all the time we have been open our staff have been dedicated to the care of our residents, which has always been our first priority.

“Harrowby is managed as a small, unique family home. Our staff are highly motivated through training and have the opportunity to develop, as shown in our Gold Standards Framework Award.”

Maggie Stobbart-Rowlands, of the Gold Standards Framework in Care Homes, said: “The GSF Care Homes programme has helped all of these homes embed quality care for all their residents as they approach the end of their lives. Many of the homes have more than doubled the number of people fulfilling their wish to die in their care home and halved the rate of crisis hospital admissions. GSF is helping to transform end of life care in this sector. We hope that this gold standard of care will become the de facto standard to which all care homes will aspire and that they receive the recognition they deserve for all their hard work.”

An Italian restaurant which closed at the weekend will be turned into a bar.

Sorrento’s, in Market Place, Grantham, closed on Saturday after its owners decided to retire from the business. Paul Bunn has taken over the lease and aims to re-open the venue as Rumours Lounge Bar at the beginning of April.

Mr Bunn has taken on the lease with business partner Dean Ward who also runs Barcode in Westgate.

Mr Bunn said: “Everything is in place and it all seems to be going ok. A lot of the older bars in town are closing down and the newer ones like Oscars, the Cider Bar and Eden are doing well and its those kind of places in the market square that will be packed in the summer. It’s a brilliant location.”

Rumours Lounge Bar will sell a wide range of wines as well as beers, Champagne and cocktails. A bar will be built at the back of the building where the kitchen in Sorrento’s used to be and the upper floor will be turned into a VIP/function room for hire. The bar will have tables and chairs outside for customers in the summer. There are also plans to sell food.

Mr Bunn is giving up his business, P. W. Bunn Carpets, which he has been running for nine years. He is passing on the business to carpet fitter Gary Riley. Mr Bunn’s wife, Tammy, will continue to run the Blue Bull pub in Westgate while he concentrates on setting up the new bar.

RUGBY: Kesteven get back to winning ways

Midlands League 3

East (North)

Kesteven 21

Amber Valley 10

Kesteven travelled to Amber Valley looking to get back to winning ways in the league following a two-week weather-enforced break.

Amber Valley started the game well and got on top up front, and looked to kick their way up the pitch using the wind. Against the run of play, Dan Turner made a strong break and beat the full back to run in the opening try. Parker converted to give the visitors a 7-0 lead.

Valley hit back and pounced on a loose ball at a line-out and ran through to score. Shortly afterwards they created an overlap out wide and ran in their second score. Both conversions were missed.

Ks responded well and looked to up the tempo of the game. Olly Wood went very close, following some good play up front. Martyn Parker then made a half-break and managed to off-load to Tom Webster, who took a great line to score under the posts. Turner converted to give Ks a 14-10 half time lead.

Early in the second half, Turner took a pop pass off Parker to score his second which was also converted.

Midgley and Carew came on for Webster and Pert and both made some strong runs. Ks had a couple of good chances to score the bonus point try, but Cooper, Turner and Hughes were all just short.

Kesteven: Whittaker, Lines, P. Jordan, Turner, J. Hughes, Parker, Wood, Sheardown, Brown, Purvis, Pert, Cowley, Flear, Turner, Woolerton. Reps: Midgley, Carew, Cooper.

Kesteven 2nd 12

Gainsborough 10

Kesteven welcomed Gainsborough to Woodnook for the first fixture between the clubs for some years.

Pete Dolan had a much changed side out but both teams were just happy to be playing after the enforced lay-off.

Early play was quite even with lots of handling errors. Kesteven tried to get the ball out to their backs to allow them to run but it was late in the half before they broke the deadlock.

In the end, it was a perfect break down the right wing which saw Alex Ingram take the ball in the clear on half way to run in for the try.

Gainsborough had some good play of their own and a fine move in their backs saw their right wing go over. Their conversion attempt just clipped the underside of the bar to leave the scores even at the break.

In the second half, the visitors had a good spell of pressure but were unable to finish. Ks survived and countered.

They were rewarded when Tyrone Miles broke away from the base of a scrum 20 metres out to score at the posts. Andy Price converted.

Gainsborough were not finished and they kept pressing to get their score just at the end. The conversion attempt to draw the match slipped wide to leave Kesteven narrow winners.

Kesteven’s Andy Peabody took charge of his first game as referee.

Kesteven: Price, Ingram, Betts, Cunningham, Windsor, Cann, Morgan, King, P. Dolan, Paton, O’Neil, Miles, J. Smith, J. Hughes, Morrissey. Reps: R. Dolan, Cann, Shields, Chambers, Cocks, McAllister (Gainsborough).

Under-13

West Bridgford 0

Kesteven 63

Kesteven won the lion’s share of possession in the first half, allowing Harry Bartlett to run in from 10 metres for an early score.

With the backs firing well, Freddie Young had time to organise his backs well for wave after wave of attacks, and Jack Palin jinked his way to the corner for a fine try.

Young continued to trouble West Bridgford’s defence, taking a try for himself and feeding George Wainwright for a further score midway through the first half. Kesteven’s forwards continued to dominate and loose West Bridgford tackling saw prop Josh Peters searing 30 metres down the touchline to put the visitors firmly in control. Bartlett completed the half’s scoring.

Kesteven continued to revel in plenty of possession, with forwards Taylor and Hughes battering their way over the line, before Bartlett completed his hat trick midway through the second half.

Centres Finley Moth and George Wainwright completed a tough morning for West Bridgford before the referee’s whistle ended their misery. Four conversions from Young completed the scoring.

Kesteven: Archer, Bartlett, Brenton, Brewis, Cole, Fuller, Hodgson, Hughes, Kwasau, Moth, Palin, Peters, Rogerson,

Sheard, Spriggs, Tapson, Tapson, Taylor, Wainwright, Young.
