Drugs kept man ‘fairly calm’ Grantham magistrates are told

Cannabis plants helped a man control his temper, a court heard on Monday.

Mark Bellamy, 40, of Albert Street, Grantham, admitted growing cannabis in Jubilee Avenue, Grantham, after 14 plants were discovered in a loft conversion during a police raid on October 4.

Eight of the plants were dehydrated but six were growing with the help of equipment and foil.

Bellamy admitted to officers that he had been growing the plants for about four weeks for his own use. The equipment cost him about £2,500.

Rob Arthur, defending, said the business owner should not be charged with cultivating the eight dead plants.

He said that Bellamy’s record spoke volumes because there were a number of violent offences up until 2010.

He said: “Bellamy told me that the reason he started smoking the cannabis was because he realised that the violence went hand in hand with him and alcohol. That’s seen through his record. When he goes out drinking he has a very short fuse.

“He found that as a result of smoking cannabis it kept him fairly calm. The primary reason why he decided to grow his own was to stop him getting in trouble in the city centres.”

Magistrates fined Bellamy £200 and ordered him to pay costs of £85 and £20 victim surcharge.

A mother shouted and swore in a school playground in the presence of children, parents and staff, a court heard.

Lisa Moore, of Belmont Grove in Grantham, admitted a charge of causing a nuisance in the grounds of National Junior School, in Castlegate.

Magistrates sitting in Grantham heard how the 34-year-old mother arrived at the school at about 2.55pm on October 17 and demanded to know why she had not been made aware of a meeting in relation to her daughter, who currently lives with an auntie.

Daniel Paulson, prosecuting, said: “She was asked to leave by the headteacher. She refused to leave and continued to swear.”

Moore was arrested by police.

Defending herself in court, Moore told magistrates any parent would understand why she did what she did on that day, adding that there were no children in the playground and only two parents.

She said: “I did raise my vioce and swear on a couple of occasions but not to be a nuisance. If you were a parent you’d understand that.

“I was upset more than anything. I wasn’t being malicious or anything like that.

“I’m guilty for doing it but I didn’t go down there to cause any trouble.”

Moore, 34, told magistrates how hard she been working to rid herself of previous problems with drugs and alcohol to get her life back on track.

Magistrates handed Moore a six-month conditional discharge and decided to take no action on the breach of a previous conditional discharge. No order for costs was made, but Moore was told to pay a £15 victim surcharge.

Drink-driver banned after being caught over the limit in Grantham

A couple of glasses of wine sent a motorist over the drink-drive limit and landed him in the magistrates’ court on Monday.

Craig Price, of Hudson Way in Grantham, admitted driving while over the alcohol limit on October 20. He was stopped by police who saw him driving a Ford Focus “at some speed” along Commercial Road.

While speaking to Price they smelled alcohol on his breath. A breath test read 65 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The limit is 35mg.

Rory Macmillan, defending, told the court that Price understands a driving ban will be handed down, which would impact heavily on his life. The court was told Price would lose his job as a bricklayer and steel worker, and would be claiming benefits as a result. Mr Macmillan also said Price would have difficulty in gaining access to his children who live in Nottinghamshire.

Mr Macmillan added: “There are really severe consequences of a disqualification.”

The court heard how Price had drunk only a couple of glasses of wine with a friend and felt “OK” to drive the couple of miles back to his home.

Mr Macmillan said: “He is devastated at the consequences and very sorry the offence has been committed.”

Magistrates were asked to impose the minimum driving ban term for a drink-drive re-offender and to base any fine they might give as though Price were on benefits. Magistrates did just that and fined Price, 26, £110 plus £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge. He was disqualified from driving for three years and offered a drink-drive rehabilitation course.

Emotional memorial service for Grantham boy Pierre Barnes

“The sweetest, loveliest, most intelligent boy” was how Zoe Barnes described her young brother at an emotional memorial service this afternoon (Monday).

There was neither an empty seat nor a dry eye at the service for Pierre Barnes at All Saints Church in Barrowby, attended by family and friends of the young boy.

Pierre died aged 12 in a tragic accident on the island of Porquerolles, southern France, earlier this month. He was holidaying with his parents Stephen and Florence, and siblings Zoe, 17, Desmond, 15, and Clemence, 13, when he went out alone on a bike ride. He failed to return to the holiday home rented by the Grantham family, of Barrowby Road. Search teams found his body at on the seabed five days later.

At the memorial service today, teachers, schoolfriends and family talked about the “happy” life of Pierre and of how he touched the lives of so many.

Headteacher of Barrowby Primary School Len Batey welcomed everyone gathered, and went on to say: “Pierre was an inquisitive, fun-loving character who will be missed by all of us here in Barrowby.”

Former headteacher Sylvia West got to know Pierre well during his three years at the school, before retiring in the summer.

She said: “Pierre showed many qualities. He was determined to do well academically and he was passionate about passing the 11+ so he could go to King’s School for his secondary education. When he achieved that, he was rightly extremely proud of himself and so was I. He worked very hard.”

Mrs West shared many memories of Pierre, from his eagerness to correct her in school assemblies to the day he gave her a lovely letter as she retired, in which he referred to her “awesomeness”.

She added: “For Pierre, the cup was always half full and never half empty.”

Several teachers talked about his thirst for knowledge, love of drama and his remarkable mind, with Mrs West saying she had thought he would become an eminent historian.

The gathering sang two of Pierre’s favourite songs, ‘Give Me Oil In My Lamp’ and ‘If I Had A Hammer’, during the hour-long service, and also listened to a CD of singing by pupils of Barrowby Primary School.

Two of his close friends also stood to say a few words, fighting through their tears to pay tribute to their good friend to say: “Although we’re putting on a brave face we’re devastated.”

Two people, including a police officer, were injured in a double assault carried out by a man in Grantham town centre.

Patrick Sawicki, of Wroxall Drive in Grantham, pleaded guilty to both assaults at Grantham Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Daniel Paulson, prosecuting, told magistrates how Sawicki, 30, was walking along Wharf Road on October 21 with a friend when he came across another man.

Mr Paulson said: “Mr Sawicki punched him, knocking him to the ground. Whilst on the ground, Mr Sawicki kicked out several times. Mr Sawicki was then pulled away by a friend and he walked away.”

The victim, who suffered a cut lip and swelling to the lip area, flagged down a passing police vehicle to report the attack.

Officers searched the area and found the defendant, who then fled. The officers caught up with Sawicki at Grantham Bus Station and as a female constable went to arrest him he hit out at her and caught the right-hand side of her face, causing jaw pain and a headache.

CS spray was used to bring Sawicki under control, the court heard. He was taken into custody.

Magistrates adjourned the case to today (Friday) to allow the Probation service time to compile a pre-sentence report.

Sawicki was granted unconditional bail.

HOCKEY: Grantham defeated by Bourne Deeping

East League Division 5NW

Grantham 0

Bourne Deeping 3rd 4

Grantham found themselves in the rare position of playing a home fixture at the opposition’s ground due to pitch repairs at the Meres but regardless of the venue, they were unable to add to their points tally, going down to a 4-0 defeat.

Grantham started brightly and matched their well-organised opposition blow-for-blow in a new-look 3-4-3 formation. However, the initial promise of the new outlook started to wear off after a misplaced pass was intercepted by Deeping’s thankful forwards who calmly played it between themselves in a series of one-twos A second goal followed as a large squad attempted an Olympic-style rolling substitution system which did not quite go to plan.

At half time, Andy Barton was carded for dissent, ensuring that Grantham would start the second half with 10 men.

Now chasing the game, Grantham were opened up on the break once more and conceded another from an excellently worked penalty corner routine.

In the last 10 minutes, Grantham showed the kind of hockey they are capable of, forcing good saves from the Deeping keeper after Duncan & Toplis man-of-the-match Sam MacAllister and Rob Buxton saw their efforts thwarted. The unlucky Groom also missed a late chance, firing wide after the on-rushing keeper had completely missed his kick.

Grantham: Leadenham, Groom (c), Wraith, Pearce, Richardson, Barton, Jacks, Hill, Willey, Braunton, Buxton, Gray, MacAllister.

l With both Grantham and Horncastle’s pitches being unsuitable for play, the women’s game was conceded 3-0 to Horncastle 2nd.

Depleted and defeated – but Harrowby United still put on good show at Rushden & Diamonds

Harrowby United travelled to the shared temporary home of reformed AFC Rushden and Diamonds – Wellingborough Town’s Dog and Duck ground – with a depleted squad due to injuries and suspensions, but acquitted themselves well again one of the division’s title favourites.

Rushden & Diamonds 3

Harrowby United 2

The starting 11 had Louis Hamilton in midfield, on loan from AFC Stamford, and included Luke Peberdy on the bench, called up from Harrowby’s Reserves.

The Arrows started the game the brighter, creating all the early pressure, and so were shocked after 11 minutes when Diamonds went ahead against the run of play. Sean McBride broke down the right hand side and crossed for Ben Morgan to slot home.

The goal stirred the home side into life and more pressure followed, leading to a second goal for Morgan after 29 minutes when he chipped over Harrowby’s keeper, Jack Drury, from the right edge of the box, the ball going in off the underside of the crossbar.

A third goal followed on 32 minutes when a route one ball was chased by Jake Newman who benefited from a slip by Drury to reach the ball first and poke home.

Harrowby, to their credit, did not and in the second period set about restoring some pride. After 53 minutes, a ball into the box was controlled by Billy Stubbs whose shot was then well saved by home keeper Quincy Shorunmu. From the resulting corner, Arrows captain Jack Whyley powered a header which amazingly hit Shorunmu in the face and somehow stayed out.

Harrowby continued to press and and chances included a Whyley shot over the bar from a corner and a Sam Hill overhead kick that just cleared the frame of the goal. After a cynical foul on substitute Matt Hodgkin, Hamilton’s free kick also flew just over.

A not 100 per cent fit Hodgkin certainly made an impact in Harrowby’s midfield and he produced a thunderous tackle to win the ball after 85 minutes. He fed to Martin Wormall who unleashed an unstoppable 25 yard drive into the top right hand corner for his 11th goal of the season.

Harrowby continued to press and were refused a stonewall penalty by referee Mr Gurney when Liam Harper was brought down bursting into the box.

Just as the game entered the first of the six minutes of added time, a fine move brought the Arrows a second goal. Hill carried the ball into the Diamonds’ half. Peberdy slotted a great through-ball to Lee Shaw who calmly stroked home.

Diamonds held out for the remaining minutes but had a scare when Stubbs headed just wide from the last corner of the game.

Harrowby’s man of the match was Jack Whyley.

Harrowby United: Drury, Hill, Stubbs, Whyley (c), Preston (Gibson, 72), Weatherstone (Hodgkin, 59), Sheridan, Hamilton (Peberdy, 82), Harper, Wormall, Shaw. Subs not used: Vorley, Fardell. Att: 569.
