A man who was found guilty in his absence at a trial has had his conviction set aside by magistrates.

Tony Muxlow, 28, of Princess Drive, Grantham, appeared in custody after failing to appear for a trial on November 5. He is accused of two assaults which he denied in March.

Bill Fraser, defending, said his client had no idea his trial had been put back to November and he had been assured by Mr Muxlow that he had not been informed of the adjournment.

The court heard that a trial date was originally set for July but a letter was sent to Mr Muxlow telling him it had been put back to November. The letter had been sent to an address in Oxford Street, but the court was told his address was now Princess Drive.

The magistrates decided to set aside Mr Muxlow’s conviction “in the interests of justice” and adjourned the case to November 24 before another trial date can be set.

Revolvers and shotguns among 132 weapons handed in during firearms amnesty

$

A total of 132 weapons have been handed in at Lincolnshire Police stations during a two-week firearms amnesty, the force reports.

The amnesty ended on Friday, securing revolvers, pistols, rifles and shotguns at stations across the county. Those that handed them in did so with a promise they would not be punished.

Chief Inspector Phil Baker said: “We’re happy that people have made the most of the opportunity to hand in these weapons, and 132 is a significant number to have removed from circulation.

“Lincolnshire is a rural farming county so there are many reasons why people may have firearms in their possession. What’s encouraging is the fact the amnesty has made people think about whether they need to hold on to these weapons, and whether they have the legal right to do so.

“Having 132 less firearms within the county means that there are 132 less opportunities for them to get into the wrong hands and be used for criminal activity. Something which ultimately makes Lincolnshire a safer place.

“I’d like to thank everyone who handed in a firearm for doing so, and everyone who helped us to publicise our campaign so well.”

Anyone who still holds an unwanted or illegally held firearms is encouraged to hand it in, and it will be dealt with according to its circumstances.

Stoppage time goal breaks hearts of 10-man Harrowby United

United Counties League

Desborough Town 2

Harrowby United 1

Harrowby United travelled to Waterworks Field, home of Desborough Town, and suffered injury time heartbreak as the hosts finally broke the superb rearguard action of Harrowby’s 10 men.

The Arrows’ numbers were reduced by a red card for full back Sam Weatherstone just before the half hour mark.

Harrowby got off to a flying start, pushing Desborough back from the outset. In the first minute, skipper Martin Wormall released Lee Shaw down the right flank who whipped a great cross to Lewis Watson at the far post. Debutant Watson’s header went just over the crossbar. Watson had another effort four minutes later when a header out from a corner fell to him on the edge of the box, but his shot flew over the bar.

After 14 minutes, Harrowby forced a corner on the right. Scott Webb put the ball in and Billy Stubbs’s header was pushed over the bar by Richard Lavin in the Desborough goal. From the resulting corner, Liam Harper rose the highest and powered a header past Lavin to put the Arrows in front.

Desborough lifted their game in response and, after a period of pressure, forced a succession of corners. From one of these in the 27th minute, Jake Bettles, appearing to push Harper in the process, headed goalwards. Weatherstone on the Harrowby goal-line stuck out an arm to deflect the ball over the cross bar. Referee Mr Cooper, having missed the push, pointed to the spot and was left with no choice but to produce a red card for Weatherstone.

Michael Byrne stepped up and planted the spot kick into the bottom right hand corner, giving the returning Jack Drury no chance.

Desborough continued to press and went close 10 minutes later from another header from a corner, but Webb cleared the ball off the line.

The home side bombarded United’s 10 men in the second half, but the visitors defended superbly and had to make do with the occasional counter-attack.

After 67 minutes, another header from a corner was tipped over by Drury. Six minutes later, Drury palmed a fierce shot from the edge over bar as the Arrows dug in and looked to hold on for a point.

A minute from time, Webb again cleared off the line, this time a shot through a crowd of players after another scramble, following a corner kick.

After a valiant defensive effort, the Arrows’ hearts were broken a minute into stoppage time. A throw-in on the right led to a ball played into the penalty area which was only headed out as for as substitute Michael Boyle-Chong, about 15 yards out. Boyle-Chong got over the ball and fired his shot into the ground, with the ball taking a slight deflection off Stubbs before nestling in the back of the net.

Desbourough saw out the remaining couple of minutes to secure the three points.

Harrowby’s man of the match award was shared between Liam Harper and Sam Hill.

Harrowby United: Drury, Weatherstone, Clarke (Currall, 38), Hill, Stubbs, Shaw, Harper, Bolland, Watson, Wormall (Payne’ 81), Webb.

Grantham court: Mother stole food from Asda

A mother stole food from a supermarket in an act of ‘desperation’ to feed herself and her three-year-old-child, Grantham magistrates heard.

Helen Alexandra Wesson, 31, of Kinoulton Court, Grantham, admitted stealing items worth £132.89 from Asda on August 20.

Prosecuting, Shelly Wilson told the court that police were called at 12.30pm after staff saw Wesson shoplifting in the Grantham store.

CCTV footage showed her taking items and she had put more than £130 worth of groceries in a trolley.

Mrs Wilson said Wesson had been seen entering the store’s cafe with the stolen goods and CCTV showed her transferring the items from the trolley to bags on her child’s buggy before leaving the store without paying.

She was stopped outside the store and fully admitted stealing the items which included food, washing powder and dog food.

Wesson had said she only had £2 left on her debit card when she was caught.

Mrs Wilson said the offence meant Wesson had breached a conditional discharge imposed in August. Wesson accepted the breach.

Rob Arthur, defending, said the offence had been “very unsophisticated” and although Wesson knew what she was doing was wrong “the overwhelming priority was to obtain food” for her daughter and her self.

Mr Arthur said Wesson had bought a drink in the cafe with the £2 she had left
and then transferred the stolen items to the bags on the buggy.

He said she was fully compliant with staff when she was stopped and the police let her go and asked her to attend a voluntary interview which she did.

Magistrates imposed another conditional discharge, to last six months, on Wesson and ordered her
to pay a victim surcharge of £15. No costs were ordered.

Offices used by MPs in Westminster had to be evacuated this morning because of an iPad belonging to an apprentice of Grantham MP Nick Boles.

Police decided the iPad was suspicious and evacuated Portcullis House, an office building opposite the Houses of Parliament.

The iPad belonged to an aide who was starting their first day in the job with Mr Boles.

Mr Boles later Tweeted: “An exciting start to my apprentice’s first day at Parliament: the whole of Portcullis House evacuated cos of security scare over his iPad!”

Mr Boles said he was not cross with the apprentice and recognised that the police were just doing their job.

He told The Daily Telegraph that he would “strongly recommend every MP to have an apprentice - I can’t think why it has taken me so long”.

The Metropolitan Police allowed people to return to Portcullis House at 10.30am.
