An 18-year-old appeared in court charged with drink driving after attending a friend’s birthday party.

Samuel Barker of High Street, Little Bytham pleaded guilty to driving with 47 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

Prosecutor Shelley Wilson outlined how shortly before 4am on June 6 police noticed a Volkswagen Polo driving eratically on Main Road in Tallington.

The car was driving at 50mph in a 60 zone, and then dropped to 15mph in a 30, so the police indicated for it to stop.

Barker fully co-operated with the officers, and after recording a breathlyser reading over the legal limit he was taken to the police station.

Representing himself in court, Barker said: “It was my friend’s birthday and we had a couple of drinks.

“That was two hours earlier and I had been drinking water to try and sober up.

“I didn’t think I was drunk, but I now know I was in excess. I would like to apologise.”

Barker also added that he was planning to join the RAF in a couple weeks, and hoped he would still be able to do so.

Magistrates said they hoped Barker had learnt his lesson and disqualified him from driving for 12 months with the opportunity to reduce this by three months through the completion of a drink driver’s rehabilitation course.

Barker was also fined £110 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £50 and a victim surcharge of £20.

employment in the retail trade.

However he was now on job seeker’s allowance and initially there had been a problem with him receiving it.

Jane Bauer, defending, explained that Lee committed the theft when he had no money and that when it was discovered by the family he asked for the police to be contacted himself.

Mrs Bauer added that her client now wanted to rebuild his relationship with the
family.

Magistrates ruled that Lee should serve a community order lasting 12 months, during which he must complete 50 hours of unpaid work.

They also placed a compensation order for him to pay back the £300, as well as a victim surcharge of £60.

On June 6 at 10.30am, Christopher Lower, 32, of Vernon Avenue in Nottingham was caught driving a van on Hazelwood Drive in Grantham.

Despite being disqualifed from driving, Lower, who works for a company supplying marquees and bouncy castles, had decided to use the van for his job as no-one else was available to drive him.

However his details came up on the police’s national database and he was stopped and taken to Grantham police station.

There, police also discovered that he had no insurance and as a consquence had breached his conditional discharge of 12 months.

Grantham court: Motorist ‘confused’ over ban

The court heard how a driver was first stopped for being drunk and disqualified in Nottingham and then a fortnight later stopped again in Grantham.

Gheorghe Patriche, 25, of Southwark Street in Nottingham, appeared at Grantham magistrates to answer two counts of driving whilst disqualified.

The first occured on April 19 in Nottingham and the second on May 3 in Grantham, plus two counts of driving without insurance, and one count of driving over the alcohol limit.

After Patriche pleaded guilty to all charges, acting in his defence Rory Macmillan said that there had been some confusion on Patriche’s part over whether his disqualification had expired.

Mr Macmillan said that Patriche had informed him how he had actually been stopped by police another time between the dates of these two incidents, and because he was not arrested for being disqualified he thought it no longer applied.

The court was also told that Patriche had been driving the BMW because of a job opportunity, having stuggled to find work in Nottingham since moving from London.

Patriche was disqualifed from driving for 14 months, with the chance to reduce this by 14 weeks by completing a drink driver’s rehabilitation course.

Magistrates also ordered him to serve a community order in the form of 150 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay the prosecution costs of £85, and a victim surcharge of £60, while his licence was endorsed with 6 penalty points.

King’s boys given lesson in the mathematics of juggling

Students at King’s School were given a maths lesson with a difference.

Dr Colin Wright, a teaching fellow at Keele University who holds a PhD in Pure Mathematics from Cambridge, gave two talks on the mathematics of juggling and entertained the boys in Years 8 and 9 with not only the history of juggling but also how he and others developed the notation for juggling.

His introduction to serious juggling happened when he arrived at Cambridge and the practical demonstration of this theory came to the fore during a visit to a pub with members of the Cambridge University Juggling Society in the 1980s. Soon afterwards they came up with their first sketches of a unified theory of juggling notation - a bit like reading music but for juggling.

All this was explained as Dr Wright casually threw, dropped and siteswapped his juggling balls into the Cascade pattern, the Shower, Mills Mess and the less memorably titled 45141. With a bit of lateral thinking, a little bit of maths and a lot of imagination juggling tricks can be accurately described by a simple series of numbers.

In the finale Dr Wright invited the audience to invent a trick by adjusting a series of cycle times to their own preference and then hurled two of the balls as high as the spotlights to demonstrate the juggle concerned.

Dr Wright said: “If I can save one child from a life in accountancy and turn them to do maths or science instead, then I’ve won.”
