Officer cadets went on parade yesterday (Thursday) at RAF Cranwell, joined by cadets from Ghana Air Force, the Jamaica Defence Force and the Royal Air Force of Oman.

Following a fly past by a Typhoon GR4 aircraft, 55 cadets amrched in front of Air Vice-Marshal Mike Lloyd to mark the graduation of officer training courses.

The Air Vice-Marshal was then invited to present course prizes. The Sword of Honour, awarded to the RAF cadet who, during initial officer training, demonstrated outstanding ability, leadership and other officer qualities, was awarded to officer cadet Miranda Cope. She was also awarded the BAE Systems Trophy for attaining the highest marks for professional studies.

Meanwhile, officer cadet Jemel Sterling, from the Jamaica Defence Force, was presented with the overseas students’ prize and officer cadet Ajvir Sandhu received the Hennessy trophy and Philip Sassoon memorial prize, awarded to the cadet who has proved to be the best all-round.

Grantham Journal letter: Made in Grantham was a great concert

I felt that I must write with regard to the Made in Grantham concert held at the Guildhall Theatre on Saturday.

It was a concert that provided a fabulous evening’s entertainment.

Premier Cru opened the proceedings with a great performance playing ‘60s hits, followed by Nigel Truman, who showed great skill on the acoustic guitar.

St John’s Church Choir just knocked us all out with their wonderful voices and Evonne Rivers entertained us with her powerful voice.

Terry Carey gave a great performance and finally the newly-formed Grantham Rhythm and Blues Band stunned us with their talent, playing a whole range of familiar pieces.

Well done to everyone, including Kevin Lawry, who introduced the acts, and to Roy Wright, who put the whole thing together.

Thank you Grantham Events Committee.

What a lovely surprise to see my old school in Memory Lane (Journal, March 14).

I remember it as if it was yesterday. Every girl was neatly turned out and just look at the hands of the first year. A work of art to be sure.

The story of two errant sweethearts holding hands on their way to school reminded me of a similar tale which happened to me!

It was a Saturday morning and the boys at King’s had school till lunchtime. I met my boyfriend, now my husband, down by the river. It was raining and we sheltered under a tree, he in his prefect’s uniform of a red jacket and gold tasselled cap and I was in my casual clothes. We were having a kiss when who should pass by but the dreaded Miss Gillies! I froze on the spot and knew my end was nigh! She walked on then came back and said: “You girl, I will speak to next week in my office.”

Every morning I expected to be called out and made an example of in assembly but she made me wait until the Friday, when I was called to her office.

She said: “I do not want girls like you in my sixth form.” She reduced me to tears and gave me a right telling off. I had taken my O-levels and was hoping to stay on and study for the pre-nursing course. I was devastated.

Meanwhile my boyfriend was seen by his headmaster Mr Higgins, who chatted over tea and biscuits!

However, Miss Gillies must have thought better of her actions and called me in again the following week saying she had been hasty and I could stay on after all. Needless to say I didn’t stay on and went off to train as a Sick Children’s Nurse in Derby.

Grantham Journal letter: Site worthy of a positive news story

$

Mowbeck Way, off Alexander Road, has recently attracted considerable Journal publicity due to a planning application to build an Islamic “community centre” there.

This prompted the English Defence League to organise a rally through Grantham town centre, whereupon the Grantham Solidarity Network was specifically formed to protest against the EDL rally and to organise its own.

We subsequently find out that the application cannot be progressed anyway for technical/legal reasons and we may wonder how much public money has been spent to ensure no major incidents arose from EDL’s and GSN’s futile protest rallies.

Mowbeck Way surely deserves different and far better publicity - simply because that address locates the most excellent recycling facility anyone could wish for. The organisation of the site is totally professional; the signage is clear; nothing is too much trouble for the staff to provide hands-on practical assistance.

I have thanked and applauded the guys at the sharp end on many occasions over the last 20-odd years. They are nothing short of brilliant and if there is a national competition for the best recycling team in the UK they must be red-hot favourites for the title - a splendid example of why Grantham is great!

How sad that ephemeral political posturing can generate more interest than decades spent providing a fantastic public service.

Grantham court: Man remanded in custody after smashing music system

A Grantham man was remanded in custody after breaching his bail conditions when he smashed up a music system at his ex-partner’s home.

Kevin Bonner, 42, of Avenue Road, appeared in custody before magistrates and admitted the criminal damage charge, which happened on March 22.

One of Bonner’s bail conditions was that he did not contact his former partner.

Prosecuting, Jim Clare told the court that on Saturday afternoon Bonner smashed up the Sony music system when he threw it on the floor, then picked it up and threw it towards a window. His ex-partner had told police that Bonner had said: “I am doing this because it’s better than hitting you.” She had said he was “aggressive and volatile”.

Bonner told police he had mental health issues and also an issue with alcohol. Mr Clare said this was a second breach committed by Bonner while on bail.

Defending, Rory Macmillan said Bonner was a single man, but had a 15-year-old daughter from a previous relationship and also a son, 22, who had died five months ago. An inquest is due into his death.

Mr Macmillan told the court that Bonner suffered from depression and anxiety and was receiving treatment at the Beaconsfield Centre in Grantham.

He said Bonner had been drinking a bit more since his son’s death, but there were no drug issues.

He was living in sheltered accommodation for vulnerable people.

The court heard that on Friday Bonner had gone into town and had met his ex-partner by coincidence. At the end of the night she invited him back to her home and, in his own words, “like an idiot” he went with her.

There was an argument between them and Bonner broke the music system.

Mr Macmillan said: “He feels very foolish and incredibly disappointed that he has given into her wishes.”

He also told the court that the ex-partner had delivered a letter to Bonner’s address on Tuesday and had visited his address no less than four times that day.

Bonner is due to appear in court on April 7 when magistrates will be given a probation report on him.

Ten-man Harrowby United win keeps promotion bid on track

United Counties League

Division One

Bugbrooke St Michaels 1

Harrowby United 3

Harrowby United collected a valuable three points on the road, despite playing for nearly an hour with 10 men, to keep their promotion push alive with five games to play.

The in-form home side took an early lead when, after six minutes, a long ball upfield found its way to Will Briscoe who advanced into the penalty area before slotting the ball past Jack Drury in the Harrowby goal.

The Badgers’ lead was short lived as the Arrows levelled things up within a minute. Sam Kirton played a fine ball down the left flank to Scott Webb who moved it on quickly to Lee Shaw. Shaw cut inside and fired inside the near post, giving keeper Alex Coleman no chance.

Things were contested evenly for the rest of the half although Harrowby were denied by a good save from Coleman who got down well to thwart Shaw as he attempted to round the keeper. From the resulting corner, Luke Peberdy’s free header went over the crossbar.

It was Peberdy’s last contribution to the game as two minutes later, referee Mr Connolly produced a straight red card to the Arrows wide man after a late crude tackle.

The Arrows’ 10 men showed great character and took the lead with the second half only two minutes old. A ball out of defence was picked up by Shaw who made great strides down the right before playing inside to Liam Jaques. Jaques met the pass with a first time shot past Coleman for his first goal of the season.

The home side pressed for an equaliser but were kept at bay by a solid Arrows defensive unit. Harrowby always looked dangerous on the break and, after 67 minutes, Shaw created a shooting chance for Bobby Lee which was deflected behind for a corner. Webb’s ball in found its way to Sam Hill whose scrambled shot was kept out by Badgers left back Gavin Nullatamby.

Five minutes later, John Currall whipped a teasing free kick into the Bugbrooke penalty area and Coleman produced the save of the game, clawing away a goalbound header from his own player, centre back Oliver Garafalo.

With nine minutes remaining, Webb hit the foot of the right hand post from the left edge of the penalty area.

The points were secured with four minutes to play when the ball was played into Martin Wormall’s feet, just inside the box. The Arrows striker turned and moved the ball away from his marker to fire a low shot into the corner of the net.

Harrowby United: Drury, Currall, Kirton, Hill, Whyley (c), Peberdy, Jaques, Lee, Webb (Weatherstone, 84), Wormall, Shaw. Sub not used: Gibson.

Failure to turn up to do his unpaid work means convicted thief Daniel Frankish must carry out another 20 hours of it.

Frankish, 33, of Beck Gardens, Grantham, admitted missing two appointments to do unpaid work as part of a community order imposed by magistrates in October for the theft of items from Morrisons.

Frankish was ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work as part of the nine month order, but he missed two days of work on February 16 and 23 without reasonable excuse.

Frankish told the court: “I am definitely going to do it. It’s only down the road from me at Grantham hospital.”

Magistrates warned Frankish that if he did not complete the work he could face a prison sentence.

Grantham court: Recovering alcoholic caught drink driving after relapse

A recovering alcoholic relapsed and was caught drink driving, Grantham magistrates heard.

Darren Goodey, 46, of Church Hill, Knipton, admitted drink driving in Grantham on March 9.

Prosceuting, Jim Clare said that on the evening of March 9 a member of the public called police to tell them that Goodey was drink driving. He was stopped and gave a positive roadside breath test.

At Grantham police station he gave a reading of 74 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Giles Tyas, defending, said Goodey has been apologetic and had written a letter for the magistrates to read.

Mr Tyas told the court that Goodey was a recovering alcoholic and who had relapsed. He had been “dry” for a year and had become complacent. Mr Tyas said Goodey had been receiving “hassle” from his ex-partner and was moving house. He did not want his new partner to see him have a drink so he went out for a drink and drove home.

Mr Tyas said Goodey was a shift manager for a recycling company.

He would probably be able to keep his job as he did not need to drive as part of his employment, but he did need to get to work from his village.

Magistrates diqualified Goodey from driving for 17 months and fined him £250. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £25 victim surcharge. Goodey accepted the offer of a drink driver’s rehabilitation course which will reduce his ban by four months if he completes it.

Grantham court: Drinker steals from three town stores

A drunken thief stole items from three shops in succession on Grantham high street.

Robert Henry, 24, of Shaw Road, Grantham, pleaded guilty to stealing a bottle of vodka worth £6.49 in B&M bargains, followed by a set of Samsung headphones valued at £19.19 from Carphone Warehouse and finally toiletries worth £3.99 from Savers.

Prosecuting, Jim Clare told the court that on March 5 Henry entered B&M Bargains intoxicated and selected the bottle of vodka which he “concealed about his person”.

He was seen by an off-duty security officer and followed out. He then went into Carphone Warehouse where he took the headphones and hid them in his clothing.

He moved on to Savers where he was seen by a supervisor taking razor blades and leaving the shop without paying.

He set the alarm off and was detained outside before police arrived and arrested him.

In a police interview, he said the thefts were down to him being drunk.

The court heard that Henry had a lengthy record of 55 offences, 28 of them for dishonesty.

He had also served a custodial sentence in 2012.

Julian Sheen, defending, said Henry came from Northern Ireland and had only been in this coutry for three months, living with his sister.

Mr Sheen said: “She has made it clear she is not going to allow him to drink and if he does drink he cannot go back to the house.

“He has started work with an agency and has reasonably regular work.

“It appears his record is very bad but these are matters at the lower end.”

Magistrates fined Henry a total of £270 for all three offences.

He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £20.
