Grantham Journal letter: Thanks for identification

$

Thank you to all the people who left feedback for us as to the identity of the ironwork found at the corner of Wyndham Park, near the electricity substation.

At the time it was removed no photograph was taken of it in situ and since it wasn’t really the sort of place you would photograph, we do not have that evidence of exactly how it was positioned.

However, I am inclined to agree with the suggestions of it being the mechanism to tighten fence cables, as it was against the fence post and lined up with the edge of the field and pavement. I have a picture of the approximate area showing a metal fence similar to the ones all around the Belton estate, but nothing with wire that would be tensioned.

Many thanks once again for the identification.

Grantham court: Driver in Halloween fancy dress was nearly twice over drink drive limit

A Halloween party-goer was driving in fancy dress when he was stopped by police and found to be nearly twice over the drink-drive limit.

Damian Numan, 27, of Becketts Close, Grantham, pleaded guilty to drink driving. In a breath test he gave a reading of 65 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Prosecuting, Tracey Ross told the court that Numan was stopped in his VW Scirrocco by police on Sunday, November 3, and gave them a positive breath test. Miss Ross said Numan had told police he had just been “involved in a domestic” with his partner. Officers noticed his breath smelled heavily of alcohol.

Giles Tyas, defending, said Numan had been to a Halloween party that night. His partner had wanted to get back into their house and needed the keys.

Mr Tyas said: “He was in fancy dress and had no shoes on and took the decision to quickly drive back to give his partner the keys to get into the property. He was kept in a cell overnight which he found very upsetting. He is genuinely remorseful for what happened. He was stupid to take the decision and it will cost him severely.”

The court heard Numan worked for Totemic in Grantham and regularly drove to other sites as part of his job. Mr Tyas said losing his licence would make his job much more difficult but Numan did not expect to lose his job. Numan also had a young son who lived in Birmingham and who he often brought back to his Grantham home in the car at weekends.

The magistrates fined Numan £475 and ordered costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £47. He was disqualified from driving for 18 months, which will be reduced by four months if he successfully completes a drink-drive rehabilitation course.

A man threw heroin over a wall while he was being chased by police, Grantham magistrates heard.

Kyle Michael O’Connor, 21, of Thames Road, Grantham, admitted possessing 0.29g of heroin on February 6.

Prosecutor Tracey Ross told the court that O’Connor was riding a scooter on Dysart Road when he was followed by police.

They saw him throw something over a wall which they recovered and later found was heroin. O’Connor later told police it could not have been him on the scooter because he had a different coloured helmet.

O’Connor first denied the charge and was due to go to trial on November 13 but he did not appear.

Defending, Rory Macmillan said O’Connor now admitted it was him on the scooter.

He had missed his trial because he was at his grandfather’s funeral and had forgotten about the court appearance.

He said police found him on Sunday and he had spent a night in the cells.

Magistrates fined O’Connor £125 and ordered costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £20.

They said O’Connor would not be punished further for missing his trial date having spent a night in the cells.

Harrowby United slip down to third following rare defeat

Harrowby United 0

Eynesbury Rovers 2

Harrowby United missed out on the chance to pull away from their visitors Eynesbury Rovers and, in fact, dropped to third place behind them in the league as they were well beaten at the Environcom Stadium.

Rovers started the game brightly and were denied by Arrows goalkeeper and man of the match Jack Drury twice in the fifth minute as he kept out headers by Tom Coles and Darren Woodend.

Harrowby struggled to get going all through the half and it was a surprise that it took Rovers until the 39th minute to take the lead. United lost possession in the Rovers half, allowing Coles the chance to break down the middle. He drew the Arrows defence before slotting the ball through to the league’s top scorer, Lee Bassett, who controlled before shooting nonchalantly past Drury.

The home side started the second half much better and were unlucky in the 55th minute when a through-ball from Bobby Lee gave Scott Webb an opportunity, but his low shot was blocked by advancing keeper Andrew Wale’s legs.

The closest Harrowby went to scoring came in the 63rd minute when a shot from Lee Shaw beat the keeper only to be cleared off the line by a covering Nathan Field.

A minute later, a cross from Jack Weeden into the Arrows area was met by Coles whose header came back off the cross bar. The ball went back to Coles whose second header looked to be going in low inside the post before Drury produced a superb diving save, pushing the ball away with his left hand.

United enjoyed by far the greater possession in the final quarter of the game but were unable to break down a solid Eynesbury back four. They were were caught on the break five minutes from time when Josh Ling broke down the left before playing the ball in to Ryan Inskip on the edge of the area. Inskip slotted through to Bassett who turned inside his marker and slotted home his second to secure the points for the visitors.

Harrowby United: Drury, Neaverson (Currell, 73), Vorley, Hill, Kirton, Peberdy (Harper, 62), Lee, Bolland (c), Webb, Shaw, Wilson (Wormall, 57).

Cadets from 47F Grantham Squadron Air Training Corps said goodbye to a long-serving member who has just retired.

Cadet Warrant Officer Liam Shirtcliffe celebrated his 20th birthday last week and under the rules of the ATC, once a cadet reaches the age of 20 they have to retire.

Liam joined the squadron in July 2007 aged 13. Liam is a former student of St Hugh’s School and has worked at Metron Eledyne in the town since leaving school.

Liam has risen through the ranks to become the most senior and achieve the top rank any cadet can reach of Cadet Warrant Officer.

Liam’s most memorable moment was seeing the Queen and speaking with the Duke of Edinburgh at RAF Cranwell.

The officer commanding 47F squadron, Flight Lieutenant Paul James said: “Liam is a ‘model’ cadet and has shown a good example to the squadron. We will all miss him and we wish him well.”

Liam said: “It has been a fantastic time at 47F, I have made many friends and I am just pleased to have reached this far during my time with the ATC.”

Cadet Warrant Officer Tom Joseph presented gifts to Liam on his last night on behalf of the cadets. Tom is now the most senior cadet at 47F Grantham Squadron.

RUGBY: Kesteven caught napping at Dronfield

Dronfield 44

Kesteven 20

Kesteven had an uphill struggle to come back into the game after a disorganised first half of many mistakes, but at least earned a bonus point with a four-try comeback.

It was not long before Kesteven found themselves fiercely defending their lines within their own 22. Dronfield were awarded a penalty which they duly slotted on the 13th minute and just six minutes later Ks were caught off-guard following an error and Dronfield ran in their first try, which was successfully converted. Less than a minute later, with the visitors pinned in their 22 following an error once again, Dronfield were awarded another penalty making the score 13-0 after just 25 minutes.

The home side capitalised on communication problems within the Kesteven ranks and badly placed kicks for their next two tries, and only missed one of the subsequent conversions, giving a half time score of 25-0.

Further mistakes and disarray from Kesteven resulted in two further tries from Dronfield early in the second half which left Kesteven trailing 39-0 on the scoreboard.

Eventually the visitors’ first break came when Dan Turner was able to pop the ball up in a tackle for the supporting Martin Carew to snatch and make a 40m charge for the Dronfield line. Although the Kesteven number weight was hauled down just feet away from the try line, the advantages of a long reach allowed Carew to secure Kesteven’s first try after 52 minutes.

Kesteven pinned Dronfield in their own half of the pitch and Turner and Carew were almost able to replicate the first try just a few minutes after the restart. Ks’ next came when Andrew Peabody set Scott Odams loose and the loosehead prop crashed through the Dronfield defence to secure five further points

From the restart, through smart work and a seamless link between the forwards and backs, Kesteven again pressed the home side back on their 5m line. Dronfield tried desperately to clear their lines but Richard Midgely was there to scoop the charge down and secure another five points with just five minutes remaining.

Olly Wood set off on a 50m downhill run before popping to Kieran Taylor who finished the length-of-the-pitch jaunt to touch down for Kesteven’s fourth try, securing the bonus point at 39-20.

But Dronfield were not done and produced some of their own magic to score out wide, with the conversion going astray in the final minute of the game.

Man of the match was Martin Carew.

NLD Under-17

Kesteven 38

Paviors 12

Kesteven welcomed Paviors for the top of the table clash and the game started with some determined running and rucking from the home side.

With some strong forward play, it was Taylor Bowers who made the first break and with a cheeky step he showed the Paviors back line a clean pair of heals to score under the posts.

Not to be outdone by the backs, Ks’ forward produced a rolling mall which took them over the line for Charlie Pirie to touch down.

The rest of the half was dominated by Kesteven, determined not to let Paviors have any ball. Matt Grinney was on form with his boot and the half time score was 12-0.

Paviors started to develop some running rugby of their own after the break, which eventually produced a score for the visitors.

But the home produced some lovely running rugby with tries from the Kesteven pack through captain Ed Bloodworth and Josh Allen, and wings – Jordan Addlesee and Joe Ryder.

Paviors scored one more try but the rest of the game was a one-sided affair and the final score placed Kesteven top of the league going into the national competition.

Kesteven: Allen, Danford, Cole, Pirie, Singer, Shennan, White, Bloodworth, B. Addlesee, Fletcher, Ryder, Bosworth, Bowers, Cartwright, Grinney. Reps: Nathan Peters, Dan Fay, J. Addlesee, Adams, Taggart.

Scunthorpe 24

Kesteven 36

Scunthorpe immediately made inroads with a strong run from their big second row.

Kesteven defended well and launched a good counter-attack up the left wing through Archer and Whinney. From a line-out, Pirie caught and drove over to open the scoring.

Scunthorpe responded well and scored through their quick fly half. But two more scores from Pirie saw Ks start to take control of the game. Whinney converted one for a 17-5 lead.

The home side pulled a converted try back just before half time to close the gap.

Scunthorpe scored another under the posts after the break, which was converted to give them a two point lead.

With Kesteven under pressure on their own line again, Eagle took a quick tap and released Pirie who raced the length of the pitch to score.

Casey came into the game with some strong runs through the centre and from one crashed through to score under the posts.

From the restart, Ks caught the ball and moved it wide to Archer who broke free and raced away also to score under the posts. Both tries were converted to give Kesteven a commanding 36-19 lead.

The last five minutes saw Scunthorpe come back strongly and they were rewarded with a score out wide.

Man of the match was awarded to Jake Eagle who led by example up front.

Kesteven: Archer, Bacon, Cant, Casey, Donnelly, Eagle, Green, Kershaw, Lewicki, Norsworthy, Pirie, Scott, Shelbourn, Sweeney, Thomas, Whinney, Wright.

Grantham Tennis Club lady veterans’ first team triumphed over Grimsby 2nd at Arnoldfield on Saturday.

Captained by Liz Frobisher, Grantham steam-rollered the visitors 8-0 overall. The pairings were Liz Frobisher and Wendy Stewart, and Jackie Wilson and Liz Isles, who performed extremely well to both win 4-0.

The ladies will be hoping to carry on with their winning ways when they meet their next opponents who will be a strong Boston side at the start of December.

The men’s first team, captained by Paul White, played away to Nottingham Castle on Sunday. The pairings were Paul White and Simon Cormor, James Drennan and Kane Goswell, and Andrew Isaac and Josh King. The team played some great tennis and outclassed the opposition completely, winning 72-36.

That made it four wins from four and, with two games left to play, they are looking good for promotion. Their next match is against Keyworth in the New Year.

The men’s veteran winter first team took on a very strong Boston 2nd on Sunday. The Grantham side were captained by Barry Priestley and consisted of Rob Isaac, David Blanchard and Karel Meuwissen. The experienced team managed to win the match and only lost one rubber, with the overall score 7-1.

The team will be hoping to dominate again in their next match against St James’ first team next month.

The third mixed team travelled to Nottingham Tennis Centre on Sunday evening to face a very strong Woodthorpe side. The team, captained by Rob Isaac, were Colin Walton, Andrew Isaac, Jo Jones and Holly Richardson.

With a strong side themselves, Grantham managed to put up a great fight but the home team were just too strong and just managed to clinch the overall victory. Grantham’s next match is against Sutton Bonington 2nd in December.

The Grantham Mini Red team played Southwell away with the team comprising Oliver Anderson, Harry Chambers, Jack Street and Jacob Boneham. The team faced strong opposition but played as well as possible, every player winning at least a match apiece, but they narrowly lost overall.
