An eagle-eyed policeman spotted a banned driver behind the wheel of a car while monitoring CCTV cameras.

Martin Frazier, of Harrow Street in Grantham, had served a five-year driving ban but was not allowed to drive until he had taken and passed an extended driving test.

He was spotted on CCTV on July 1 but police could not locate him. However, the following day Frazier was again seen on CCTV behind the wheel and was arrested.

As a result he was charged with two counts of driving whilst disqualified and two counts of driving without insurance.

Rory Macmillan, defending, said it was a misunderstanding as Frazier had not realised he needed to pass the extended test following his ban.

Mr Macmillan said: “He says he is very upset he has put himself in this position.”

The court was told Frazier’s car - a Ford Puma - has been impounded and will be scrapped.

Frazier told magistrates he only has £8 a week spending money after paying his council tax and bedroom tax.

He was fined a total of £220 and must pay costs of £85.

Foul and abusive language landed a 40-year-old man in court.

Lee Rawle of Harrowby Road, Grantham, was witnessed by police officers shouting and swearing outside Your Local Supermarket in London Road.

He was told to calm down but did not. Officers attempted to give Rawle a fixed penalty notice but when he said he could not pay he was charged with being drunk and disorderly in a public place.

Jim Clare, prosecuting, said Rawle lost his temper after he was ejected from the shop for being aggressive and abusive.

Defending himself, Rawle said: “I will admit I was drunk but I was the only person that was assaulted that night.

“I was assaulted by two Turkish people and landed on my head.

“I thought I had been done a wrong turn.”

Rawle admitted the offence. He was given a six-month conditional discharge and told to pay a £15 surcharge. He was spared costs.

A Grantham man who has continually failed to carry out his unpaid work was sentenced to a further 25 hours.

Stuart Scrivens of Kinoulton Court had been sentenced to 110 hours of unpaid work for taking a vehicle without consent.

However, since the sentencing Scrivens has failed to attend appointments with the Probation Service.

Mr Patel of the Probation Service said: “The true picture is he has been offered 24 appointments and has not attended any.

“His supervising officer has never met him.”

Stuart Wild, defending Scrivens, said he had come into difficulties with childcare.

He added: “I think he has buried his head in the sand to be honest with the court.”

Scrivens was ordered to pay £75 costs and carry out a further 25 hours of unpaid work.

Chair of magistrates Mr Tollemache told Scrivens he was sentencing him to more hours because: “we do not like it when people bury their heads in the sand”.

Two men have been charged with the murder of a Grantham man who was attacked early on Sunday morning.

Ben Croft, 24, and Sam Croft, 21, both from Barrowby, have been charged with murder and were remanded in police custody. A further man and a woman also arrested in connection with the incident, in Edinburgh Road, were released without charge.

Grantham court: Day in cells for plug damage

A man who admitted damaging a plug socket found himself spending a day in custody.

Jack Wakefield of Station Road, Castle Bytham, admitted causing the damage at a house he rented from South Kesteven District Council.

The court heard Wakefield, 30, got into an argument with his partner and picked up the television, pulling the plug from the wall and damaging the socket, which he repaired himself for £2.

The case had been referred back by the Crown Prosecution Service for the police to consider a caution. The police rejected the request, however Wakefield thought the matter had been dealt with so failed to appear in court earlier this month. As a result, a warrant was issued for his arrest. On Monday he admitted causing the damage to the socket and breaching his bail by not attending court.

Bill Fraser, defending, said: “He is very sorry about what happened.”

Magistrates found Wakefield had served his punishment while in custody. He must also pay £40 in costs.

Grantham court: Man jammed thumbs into woman’s eyes

A terrified mother was attacked by her partner who threw her out the front door before straddling her and jamming his thumbs in her eyes.

Anthony West, formerly of Coles Way, Grantham, but now living in Thames Road, Grantham, admitted assault following the incident in Coles Way on July 6.

A statement was read out from the victim who said the pair had been arguing when he became violent.

She said: “He picked me up with both of his hands and dragged me along the carpet to the front door and threw me on the pavement outside.”

The victim then said West poked her in the right eye “a number of times” and the left eye twice. She described the pain, on a scale of one to 10, as an 8, adding that it was “extremely painful”.

The victim said the attack left her “scared to live in her own house”.

A neighbour who had witnessed the attack called 999. In a statement, the neighbour said she saw West throw the victim out onto the pavement, adding that he “appears to be trying to put his fingers into her eyes”. The neighbour said she was shocked by what she saw.

Bill Fraser, defending, said West accepted the assault charge but denies throwing the victim outside. Mr Fraser said: “He thought the best thing to do would be to take her out of the house. He certainly did not throw her out of the house.”

Mr Fraser said the victim “may have tripped and fell” outside the house.

He added: “He accepts he had his thumbs in her eyes. That’s something he totally regrets and he accepts he should not have done that.”

The court was told the victim will be seeking a restraining order against West.

The case was adjourned until August 12 for pre-sentence reports. West was bailed with the conditions he does not contact the victim and does not go to Coles Way.

MOTOR RACING: Harvey edges up to third in GP3 standings

Bassingham racing driver Jack Harvey secured two strong finishes in the latest round of the GP3 Series at Hungary over the weekend.

A fourth place finish in Saturday’s race, followed by fifth on Sunday, saw the Racing Steps Foundation-backed driver move up to joint third in the drivers’ standings, just 16 points adrift of the leader with three more race weekends to go.

On Saturday morning, Jack qualified his ART GP car in fifth position for the afternoon’s race. Lining up on the third row of the grid, the MSA Team UK driver made a great start and was up to fourth position before turn one.

He spent the closing stages of the race fighting off the efforts of Sainz Jnr to retain fourth and claim a further four championship points.

For the reverse grid race on Sunday morning, Jack lined up in fifth position to take the race start and, after a fairly processional race, made no progress as the entire field struggled to make up many places, and settled for fifth.

Jack said it had been a solid weekend of racing: “We had a good pace in qualifying but I had traffic on my final set of tyres when I was attempting to set my flying lap, so my best lap was only good enough for P5.

“The track here is very tough to overtake on so, unfortunately, we weren’t able to make up too many places in the races.

“Our goal, as always, remains the championship so we will be working hard to build on this weekend’s result at the next round in Spa.”

Jack began racing in karts at tracks such as Fulbeck and Brandon. He won every karting championship he entered, including in Europe, before moving into single-seater cars and last year won the British Formula 3 Championship.

The Spa round of the GP3 Championship takes place over August Bank Holiday weekend.

All of the traffic wardens taken on in December leave positions in face of abuse from motorists

County council bosses have revealed that all of the traffic wardens they took on in December have left in the face of abuse from motorists.

The team of green jacketed wardens, employed through APCOA, have all been replaced ‘at least once’ since the council took over the responsibility of parking fines from the police.

Mick Phoenix, parking services manager at Lincolnshire County Council, said: “Not one patrol officer who started when the civil parking scheme launched in December is still a patrol officer in Lincolnshire now.

“The whole team has been replaced at least once.

“It is down to stress of the job and sickness. They receive abuse from motorists.

“And even in the least serious cases, let’s just say they are subject to the odd quiet word from drivers.”

Council parking services manager Matt Jones said: “On record, our enforcement officers have been subjected to approximately 35 cases of abusive or threatening behaviour.

“However, this number does not reflect the true extent of the problem, wardens often face abuse on a daily basis.”

Grantham’s Meres leisure centre hosted its inaugural Back to Netball festival on its courts last Sunday, with 10 teams competing from Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire.

Back to Netball is a current England Netball initiative that is happening up and down the country, providing a gentle introduction into the sport and is proving to be a great success.

Grantham had two teams represented in the tournament, Fenland Lynx incorporating ladies from the recent Meres B2N programme, and the recently reformed (after a six year break) Walton Lions. Teams played four 20-minute matches to then find a final position for the play-offs in the afternoon.

After winning all their morning games, Walton Lions found themselves in the final against the Bassingham Belles. The match got off to a tight start, goal for goal. But Bassingham dug deep and managed to pull ahead, leaving Lions as overall runners-up.

Final standings: 1 Bassingham Belles (Lincs), 2 Walton Lions (Lincs), 3 Blaby (Leics), 4 Melton Mavericks (Leics), 5 Blaby 2nd (Leics), 6 Grantham Lynx (Lincs), 7 Brigg (Lincs), 8 Newark (Notts), 9 Lincoln (Lincs), 10 Collingham (Notts).

FULL REPORT: Grantham Town maintain 100 per cent winning record

Rainworth Miners Welfare 0

Grantham Town 1

A hot afternoon at Rainworth saw Grantham maintain their 100 per cent pre-season winning record.

Their Northern Premier League Division One South opponents gave the Gingerbreads a decent enough test, but did not have enough to break down a solid Grantham rearguard.

Former Brigg and Goole winger Danny Buttle was the first to present a threat. He got down the Grantham right and delivered a low cross that the Gingerbreads defence comfortably cleared. A minute later, the home side created a shooting chance for Jared Holmes, but he curled his effort over the top of the Gingerbreads goal.

With five minutes on the clock, Grantham scored with their first serious attack. Rainworth failed to clear the initial cross well and Jamie McGhee returned the ball into the danger area. Sam Purcicoe put the ball into the centre where Greg Smith headed home from close range.

Town had now woken up and Nathan Watson turned sharply 20 yards out, but lifted his shot just too high. Romaine Graham almost got on the end of a huge clearance from Dan Haystead as Grantham got the ball forward quickly to put the home side under pressure.

Midway through the first half, neat football saw Grantham work the ball well from the back to Graham. His effort went wide of James Martin’s goal. Rainworth only threatened sporadically. When they did, Grantham defended well and Haystead did not have to make a save. Lee Ridley blocked Jamie Brown before he could get a shot away.

McGhee was involved in a lot of the good moves from Grantham. He twisted and turned the home defence and shot from the edge of the penalty area. Martin did well to turn the effort over for a corner. McGhee then fed Greg Smith who laid the ball back for Watson. Watson slipped his shot past Martin, but agonisingly wide of the post as well.

Jake Turner was in action shortly after coming on as one of Grantham’s three half time substitutions. Brown sent Buttle away but Ridley cleared his cross. Callum Lloyd put the ball back into the danger zone for Joe French who turned Deon Meikle. Turner stood his ground well at the near post to give French little at which to shoot.

Grantham made another three substitutions, then took the sting out of the game. After a period of scrappy play, Watson took control of midfield just in front of the Grantham back line and ran the rest of the game. The Gingerbreads played possession football, not looking like adding to their score, but without looking in any danger of conceding a goal.

Grantham Town: Haystead (Turner, 45), Purcicoe, Ridley, Meikle (Chambers, 57), Hawes, Nwadike, Watson, Keane (Towey, 45), G. Smith (McDonald 57), Graham (K. Smith, 45), McGhee (Neill, 57).

‘Web censorship raises questions over our freedoms’ says Grantham Journal columnist Jacob Stuart

Jacob writes:

“The internet is truly a dark, frightful place. If you happen to be an out of touch MP.

Or maybe you are just an MP toeing the party line. In either case it is a scary thought; would you rather have your country ran by those ignorant to the modern world or those so eager to climb the political ladder they forsake common sense?

Nick Boles, Grantham MP, last week published his thoughts in the Journal on the proposition from the Government that internet service providers would have an adult content filter active by default.

Among them, he pointed out that the Prime Minister is right to challenge “big search engines” to filter their results. While I agree that more needs to be done to wipe truly harmful material from the internet, carpet bombing the world’s greatest archive on free information and discussion probably is not the smartest way to go about it, particularly as there is bound to be issues with the filter to work through.

If this is not a push for censorship under the guise of “won’t someone think of the children?” then the real way to support parents, in the words of Mr Boles, is to truly do that. Teach them how to use the internet safely if they need help so they can teach their children.

Having criticised the previous Government for their policies, creating a ‘nanny state’, this sort of act seems hypocritical. And worse are the questions over free speech and thought.

In removing content from the internet with an opt-out clause, the embarrassment of essentially ‘outing’ oneself in front of the family will mean this act of censorship has a built-in shield as The Sun lies open on a protected page 3 on the breakfast table.”
