Hazel Hibbitt admitted committing a shop theft after she was caught having left the store with a trolley full of items she had not paid for.

Rob Arthur, defending, said Hibbitt believed her then partner was going to pay for the goods.

He said: “It appears there was some confusion between Miss Hibbitt and her ex-partner as to who was going to be responsible.

“She has confirmed it would be very difficult to prove her account as her ex-partner would not be willing to attend court and speak on her behalf.”

Hibbitt, 56, also admitted breaching three conditional discharges.

Sentencing was adjourned until June 28.

Alcohol was blamed by a man who verbally abused police officers while on a night out in Grantham.

Ben Jameson of Brendon Close, Gonerby Hill Foot, admitted committing a public order offence in Grantham town centre on May 26.

The court heard Jameson had been told by officers to get into a taxi and leave the town centre because he had drunk too much and was being argumentative.

Eventually Jameson did get into a taxi but then began making lewd gestures to police officers.

Daniel Pietryka, prosecuting, said: “It was the “come on” gesture, according to the officers, and shouting to them “you f***ing c***s”.

Police officers then approached the taxi and arrested Jameson.

Jameson, defending himself, said: “I think it was all down to too much alcohol in my system. It was not like me to behave like that, especially that kind of language.

“I would just like to apologise.”

Jameson, 22, was fined £100, a victim surcharge of £20 and costs of £85.

A guilty conscience caused a man who stole his girlfriend’s mother’s car before crashing it in Barrowby to hand himself in.

Stuart Scrivens of Kinoulton Court in Grantham admitted aggravated vehicle taking, driving without a licence, driving without insurance and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

Daniel Pietryka, prosecuting, told the court Scrivens stole the car at 4.30am.

Mr Pietryka said: “He drove to Barrowby and when he got to the village, he says, it all went wrong and he smashed it into another car.”

Scrivens, 21, fled the scene before returning 20 minutes later to make sure nobody was in the second car or was injured.

Mr Pietryka added: “The next day guilt got the better of him and he went to the police station and gave himself up.”

Scrivens, defending himself, described his actions as “silly”. He admitted previously being addicted to drugs but said that was no longer the case and they did not play a part in this offence.

Scrivens was sentenced to an 18-month community order which includes a “Thinking Skills Programme”. He must also complete 110 hours’ community service, pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £60.

Scrivens was banned from driving for 12 months.

A man who went into town to “drown his sorrows” admitted a public order offence after slapping a woman in the face.

Greg Willis of Larch Close, Grantham, was seen on CCTV walking in Westgate in the early hours of May 12 when he fell over a bench and wrongly blamed a woman who was walking close by.

Daniel Pietryka, prosecuting, said: “He got up and is said to have slapped the female hard around the face with such force that she fell to the floor.”

Police arrested Willis, 23, but the victim refused to make a statement.

Rob Arthur, defending, told the court Willis was in an emotional state at the time of the offence after receiving bad news.

He added: “Following that devastating news he accepts he went out and drank to drown his sorrows.”

Mr Arthur said Willis would like to apologise for his actions “which he accepts were unnecessary”.

Mr Arthur added: “If he knew who they were he would apologise.”

Magistrates adjourned the case until June 28 to allow for a pre-sentence report to be written.

Chair of magistrates Mr Spinks said: “This is a very serious matter - the fact you lashed out.”

Grantham Swimming Club’s Hayley Milne has broken the national 200m breaststroke (short course) disability record.

She knocked an amazing 10 seconds off the previous best for the distance at the East Midlands Championships and is the first swimmer in the club’s history to hold a GB record.

Hayley has cerebral palsy and swims in the SB7 classification. She also qualified to swim at national level in 50m and 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 100m breaststroke. Her 100m breaststroke time is the third best in the disability event all-time rankings.

Grantham SC head coach Maciej Rakowski said: “This is a fantastic achievement by Hayley as she is such a hard worker. We do not have a disability squad in our club so she must train exactly the same as other swimmers, but she still keeps smiling.

“If Hayley keeps progressing this way, she might be even swimming at the Olympics in Rio.”

A motorist stopped by police after driving on the wrong side of the road was so drunk he could hardly stand up, Lincoln Crown Court was told.

Janis Pakalnins attracted the attention of officers when he continued on the wrong carriageway after overtaking a parked vehicle in Dysart Road, Grantham.

Edna Leonard, prosecuting, said: “He eventually swerved back on to his correct side of the road.

“The officers were concerned and activated the blue lights and stopped the vehicle. The defendant was clearly drunk. He could hardly stand up when he got out of the vehicle. He was confused and unsteady on his feet.”

Tests showed Pakalnins was more than three times over the legal limit with 105 mgs of alcohol per 100 mls of breath, compared to the legal limit of 35 mgs.

Pakalnins later admitted he shared three bottles of whisky with a friend before getting behind the wheel of his car.

Pakalnins, 28, of Castlegate, Grantham, admitted driving with excess alcohol on February 23. He also admitted breach of a suspended jail sentence imposed at the crown court in September last year for possession of a knife outside a Grantham nightclub and obstructing a police officer. He was jailed for a total of six months and banned from driving for two years.

Recorder Nigel Daly told him: “The problem is that you drink too much.”

Chris Jeyes, defending, said that Pakalnins was upset at the time of the driving offence after learning that his long-term partner had started a relationship with another man.

He urged that Pakalnins be given the chance of help to address his drink problem.

A 68-year-old disabled man who died after being unable to escape a fire in Long Bennington has been named locally as Peter Dore.

Mr Dore died of severe burns following the fire at his home in Fen Lane on Saturday afternoon. He was flown to hospital by air ambulance but later died of his injuries.

A neighbour, who also suffered burns, tried to rescue Mr Dore and pull him out of the house before emergency services arrived. Mr Dore was said to be semi bedbound.

Police have said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire.

Sean Taylor, of Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, said: “What took us by surprise was the extent of the fire when we arrived. It really was quite a ferocious fire.

“A neighbour had acted very bravely and entered the property in thick smoke and rescued the occupant, who we now know has tragically died.”

Grantham members of Newark Rowing Club were in action at the Nottingham Sprint Regatta on the River Trent last weekend.

Harriet Swindells and Hannah Fulton (both KGGS) continued their winning streak,to collect tankards in the girls’ WJ15 double sculls event. They finished more than four lengths ahead of a crew from Lincoln Rowing Club in their heat, and then had to scull well to beat a local team from Nottingham Rowing Club in the final, which they won by a length.

Their younger team-mates, Jenna Draycott and Katie McLaughlin (KGGS), also won a hard-fought heat to go into the final of the WJ13 double sculls; they then rowed confidently to record an easy win against a Loughborough crew.

A number of the more experienced junior boys travelled further afield to compete in the Marlow Regatta at Eton Dorney Olympic Rowing Lake.

Despite competing in a large field of 32 of the country’s top crews, George Mitchell (Priory Ruskin Academy), Will Bowmar (King’s School), Max Bradbury (King’s School) and Robbie Goodwin (Newark Academy) rowed a fantastic heat to finish second only to Leander, and make it through to the A division final of the J18 quadruple sculls; this despite three of the crew being at least a year younger than most of their competitors.

The boys then finished in a fantastic sixth place in their division, and ninth overall, a great achievement in a prestigious event.
