An award for progress in literacy and numeracy has been presented to Ropsley Primary School.

The Basic Skills (Primary) Quality Mark Award was presented for the first time to the school and lasts for three years, after which another assessment will be made.

Headteacher Ann Cook said: “I’m very proud of all the hard work the staff have put in to ensuring good teaching and good practice for our pupils.”

The Quality Mark promotes, supports and celebrates progress and improvements made by schools in English and Mathematics.

A spokesman for the Quality Mark programme said: “Without these ‘basic skills’ of good communication, literacy and mathematical skills, individuals are disadvantaged throughout their lives - as learners, in the workplace and as parents, consumers and citizens, and so they form the bedrock of a good education.”

Kesteven 15

Bakewell 12

Kesteven stormed to their fifth consecutive NLD final in a thrilling and brutal encounter at Sleaford on Sunday.

The Black Army started apace and a sweeping passing movement saw Jack Palin find space on the wing, and his blistering pace took him over in the corner.

A similar try midway through the first half began with scrum-half Devlin Archer’s blind side break, and again Palin danced over for his second.

Ks’ back row of Jacob Hughes, Glyn Cox and Dan Brenton created space for centre Edwards who released left wing Adam Tapson to score in the corner. Bakewell pulled a try back before half time.

It was the final play of the game before any further score, with Bakewell scoring under the posts but still four points behind triumphant Kesteven.

Kesteven under-13 are from left, back – coaches Dave Hodgson, Angus Shaw, Glyn Cox and Tom Price; middle – Josh Peters, Harvey Fuller, Dan Brenton, Harry Cox, Jacob Hughes, Davey Hodgson, Tom Edwards, Cutirs Taylor, James Cole and Ben Cole; front – Lochlan Parr, Patrick Sheard, George Wainwright, Devlin Archer, Will Brewis, Freddie

Young, Zac Spriggs, Finley Moth, Adam Tapson, Jack Palin and Toby Tapson.

Under-12

Kesteven finished as runners-up at the Market Harborough Festival on Sunday after going unbeaten in their pool games.

They beat Ashby 15-5 with tries from Ethan Archer, Danny Moore and Jack Pirie. And a 20-5 win over Market Bosworth saw tries from Ben Whinney, Moore and Pirie (2).

Ks triumphed 10-5 over Hinckley with Moore and Archer the try scorers, and a 5-5 with Market Harborough took them into the final courtesy of another Moore try.

Kesteven put up a valiant fight in the final but went down 30-0 to a very strong Wymondham side.

Under-11

Kesteven 21 Oakham 17

Kesteven 14 Whitchurch 17

Kesteven went behind early on to Oakham, conceding quick two tries, one of which was converted.

But Bob Singer opened the scoring for Ks and Sam Sacker added the two points. Patrick Bishop scored a second try and Sacker’s conversion gave Kesteven the lead.

A third try put Oakham back in front, but Jamie Bishop’s try gave Ks victory, sealed by a Tom Duncomb conversion.

Kesteven conceded 12 points early on again against Whitchurch, who added a third try at the start of the second half.

Scrum-half Bishop scored at the corner for Kesteven, with Duncomb adding the two points, as the home side started to dominate.

Singer powered over the line for Kesteven’s second and Duncomb’s conversion reduced the deficit to three points, but the final whistle came to soon.

Under-10

Kesteven defeated Oakham 20-5 with tries from Tom Helliwell (2) and Daniel Keenleyside (2). And Ks also beat touring team Whitchurch 15-10 with scores from Jonny Marris and Helliwell (2).

A second match against Oakham saw a 25-10 victory. Try scorers were Daniel Brumhead and Keenleyside (3).

A final game saw Ks beat Whitchurch a second time, this time 25-10 with tries from Alfie Sanderson, Max Shippey, Bobby McDonald, Keenleyside and Freddie Thomas.

Kesteven: Sanderson, Thomas, Brunton, Clough, Keenleyside, Brumhead, Edwards, Draycott, Brady, Shippey, Helliwell, Jakes, Marris, McDonald, Farmer.

Under-8

Kesteven divided their squad, with the Tigers going to the Market Harborough Festival and Lions to Oakham.

Lions played seven games at Oakham, winning one and losing six, although all were close.

Josh, Arianne, Monty, William, Jacob, Luka and Terry all worked hard and showed great skill.

Ks fought out four pool games at Market Harborough and started out with a 7-4 win over Wymondham. Tries came from Cam A., Sam B., Sam G., and Rory S.

A 6-4 victory over Stoneygate followed with tries coming from Leo, Rory S., Cam A. and Chris G. Ks went down 6-5 to the hosts’ second team, with five tries from Sam G., Cam A., Cam. B and Rory S.

Leo scored a hat trick in Ks’ 4-1 win over Nuneaton, with Sam B. also on the scoresheet, but it was not enough to reach the final.

Grantham Journal Letter: In support of parking wardens

$

After reading the comment in last week’s Journal regarding the parking warden who stopped outside of Escritt and Barrell and moved some cars on that shouldn’t have been stopped there, I and many other people that I know, happen to think that the traffic wardens are doing a fantastic job in the town.

I find it hard to believe what a mess this town would be in without them being here. Can you imagine what would happen if everyone just parked where they wanted to? The town would come to a standstill.

I for one, wish them good luck in their hard task.

Grantham Journal Letter: SOS Grantham Hospital grateful for support

$

I would like to thank the 7,696 people who signed the recent petition organised by SOS Grantham Hospital.

This called for the return of a fully operational A&E Unit, a consultant-led team to return to the Midwifery Unit, and the provision of an Acute Stroke Unit at Grantham Hospital.

Although the public consultation officially began before Christmas, we soon realised that we could not campaign straight away, as some people were confusing it with the campaign against the closure of Grantham Ambulance Station. So we held back, to give Last Gasp a clear run.

When we did begin campaigning later, practically all the signatures we collected were from a three-week period, which gives some indication of the depth of feeling about the issue in and around Grantham.

I would also like to thank all the various shops and businesses which had the petition for their staff and customers to sign.

In particular, I would like to thank Asda and Morrisons/Isaac Newton Centre, for allowing us to use their entrances to collect signatures, and also Munch in St Peter’s Hill; Grantham Health Store in King’s Walk; BrightHouse in the Isaac Newton Centre; G. Skinners and Sons (Butchers) in Market Place; Lloyds Pharmacy in New Beacon Road; and Wellies and Costcutter, both in Springfield Road. Each of these shops collected over a hundred signatures.

The people of Grantham have spoken. Now we need Shaping Health to listen.

Five members of Witham Wheelers’ off-road fraternity took part in the last round of the Thetford Winter MTB Enduro series last Sunday.

Gary Symons was the only Wheeler contesting the 18 to 39 age group. Riding his new super lightweight bike, he rode an excellent race to complete four laps in 2hr 7min for 50th place out of 135 riders.

In the over-40s, Dave Moulds came 31st out of 125, completing four laps in 2.13. Mark Kokocinski was not far behind and John Clifton finished 65th. Paul Green was 98th after suffering yet another puncture and completing just two laps.

Grantham Journal Letter: Expel those who are negligent towards health

$

How sad I feel it is that in the 21st century here in Great Britain there are senior NHS chiefs who seem to believe it is acceptable to give government targets priority over the wellbeing of the elderly, sick and vulnerable.

They, along with our politician friends, seem to have perfected the art of spin (some would say blatant lying) and practice it without any sense of shame.

As a member of a family who has suffered the avoidable loss of a loved one through medical care of the same standard as the mid-Staffordshire Trust, (I hasten to add not in this county), I can only say that they seem to have a perverse sense of priorities.

In any other walk of life, to operate in this cavalier manner thereby causing loss of life, would quite rightly expose them to the full wrath of the law of the land.

How is it that they can operate in this manner, showing total disregard for our laws, and appear to have the full backing of our elected MPs?

Indeed, a number of these chiefs were chosen by past and present leaders of our Government.

Over the past three years I have experienced a total lack of co-operation and respect from a number of MPs, including Nick Boles, and various government departments in trying to get some kind of justice in the case of my late mother, who sadly passed away on Mothering Sunday 2009.

My sole purpose for carrying on this personal crusade has never been financial but purely in the hope that sooner or later this cruel state of affairs will change and these ‘fall guys’ will be held to account.

I have many personal friends who are employed by the NHS and I am convinced that it is imperative to show our support for the vast majority of conscientious staff by expelling the negligent few and helping to raise morale, thereby ensuring a safe, strong future for all.

It is not widely known that very soon county councils will be taking on much more responsibility with regards to the running of hospitals in their region. With this in mind, I have come to the conclusion that never has there been a more important time regarding health issues to ensure that we elect truly independent county councillors into local government.

I would suggest that to vote for a Lincolnshire independent candidate would be a very wise move.

TABLE TENNIS: Matthew is star of Grantham club’s tournament

Cliffedale Chandlers Table Tennis Club held its most successful tournament to date last Sunday.

The two-star tournament at The Meres leisure centre attracted more than 130 young entrants from all over the country.

Among them was number one seed Matthew Leete, a King’s School Year 8 student, who won the Cadet boys’ singles competition after triumphing over Yorkshire’s James Garrod.

Matthew expressed his thanks to Durham Cleaning Services for their generous sponsorship assistance over the past year.

Isaac Newton Primary School Year 6 pupil Alexandra Robinson reached the final of the girls’ under-11 event, in which she finished runner-up.

Anyone interested in playing table tennis or wanted any information should contact Darran Leete on 07702 235644 or visit the club website at www.cliffedalechandlers.org.uk

Grantham Journal Letter: Repairing the potholes must be a priority

$
0
0

I have read with interest and dismay about the proposed 4,000 houses and road system which South Kesteven District Council is determined should be built between Spittlegate Level and Woodnook, which is apparently going to solve all the traffic jam problems in Bridge End Road.

Have I missed something, as I can’t really see how building 4,000 more dwellings is going to solve any traffic problems?

Directing A1-bound traffic from Woodnook to Spittlegate Level will achieve nothing as only southbound traffic can access the A1 from Ponton. Northbound A1 traffic will still need to travel through town, or carry on from Woodnook to Easton, to gain access to the A1.

A52-bound drivers will also be no better off if they travel from Woodnook to Spittlegate level as they will then have to drive along South Parade and through Grantham, instead of driving along Bridge End Road as they do at present.

So, this new road will merely transfer the major traffic jams from Bridge End Road to South Parade, which benefits no one. This seems to be a very expensive plan which is currently very poorly thought out.

Also, how is Lincolnshire County Council going to fund the maintenance of any new roads considering the current appalling state of nearly all roads in Grantham?

The size of some potholes in town roads needs to be seen to be believed, including the one in the centre of London Road/Wharf Road junction, several in Stanton Street/Wide Westgate junction, Castlegate, near the junction with East Street, and St Catherine’s Road adjacent to the pedestrian crossing close to the river. The list is endless.

Those potholes which have been “repaired” in the last few weeks are now reappearing as the new tarmac has not been compacted sufficiently into the holes.

A cyclist was killed in Lincolnshire very recently when he was thrown from his bike on hitting a deep pothole. Numerous motorists are needing to have their cars repaired due to pothole damage.

Surely it would be better for LCC to bring our current roads up to standard before contemplating any new roads being built in the county? Let alone new roads which will only increase traffic problems, rather than solve them.

Grantham Journal Letter: The worst place for dog mess

$

Further to recent correspondence about dog mess.

As someone who is a newcomer to town, I wonder how many people realise how bad the problem is here?

I have lived in London (35 years), Cambridgeshire, and Grantham (three years).

Without any question of doubt, this is the worst place for dog waste. Litter is also on a par with London.

As for the people who are bagging their pet’s waste, then throwing it on the floor, what is their rationale? I regularly pick up a carrier bag of litter in five minutes along Hills and Hollows to Harrowby Playing Field route.

If social responsibility doesn’t work, license someone to fine. A profit would be guaranteed.

Also add a few dog bins around the area.

From a dog owner who does the right thing.

VIDEO: River clean dredges up shopping trolley, traffic cones and a fire extinguisher

Ten hardy volunteers gave up their time at the weekend to dredge the River Witham of fly-tipped rubbish.

The Grantham Rivercare volunteers worked their way from Queen Elizabeth Park through to Wyndham Park and collected 16 bags of rubbish in total.

John Knowles of Grantham Rivercare said: “At first glance there did not appear to be a great deal of rubbish, but when we got stuck in we came across rather more than we had anticipated. It is a good time of year to carry out a clean up along the embankment before the spring vegetation appears.”

On top of the 16 bags of rubbish the river cleaners also came across one shopping trolley, two traffic cones and a fire extinguisher.

John said: “Well done all of you who came along and I look forward to seeing more of you next time out.”

Grantham Town not strong enough at Rushall Olympic

Evo-Stik Northern Premier League

Rushall Olympic 3

Grantham Town 1

Rushall proved too strong for Grantham, despite a solid opening half hour from the Gingerbreads.

Level at half time, two second half goals saw Town beaten on their travels for the 12th time this season.

Both sides slugged it out from the opening whistle on a heavy pitch which was still showing the effects of the midweek game.

Grantham matched their play-off chasing opponents and carved out the first chance of the game after six minutes. Adie Hawes won his header from a good delivery into the Rushall penalty area and the ball fell to Gregg Smith. Smith failed to catch his volley right and the chance was lost.

Rushall immediately showed where they were to be most dangerous all afternoon. Josh Cradock fed full back Kyle Haynes wide on the Grantham left. Lee Ridley did well to get back and block the cross.

Referee Mr Cheosiaua kept stopping the game, but that proved an advantage to the Gingerbreads. Rushall’s Sam Smith rose unmarked to head wide from a Rushall free kick, but a minute later a free kick for the Gingerbreads led to the opening goal. Emeka Nwadike delivered the ball high into the Rushall penalty area. Gregg Smith challenged with Chris Gemmell and the ball sailed over both to end up in the corner of the net.

As the half wore on, Rushall began to get on top and dominate possession and territory, but without seriously troubling Jake Turner. Dave Walker was allowed to run looking suspiciously offside, but Turner did well to stop him in his tracks. Sam Smith again got up highest from a corner at the far post, but Turner was in the right place and his header was straight at the Grantham goalkeeper.

Ahmed Obeng was the biggest threat to Grantham with his pace and close control. On 25 minutes, he collected a header from Walker and beat the Gingerbreads defence. From the edge of the penalty area, he hit a shot that rattled back off the crossbar.

Rushall captain Wayne Daniel spread play wide to Haynes and he cut inside off the wing and let fly, but good covering by Deon Meikle blocked his shot. A few minutes later, a long clearance dropped for him and he hit it first time, but over the top.

Four minutes from half time, Rushall got themselves level. Obeng ran at the Grantham defence again and let fly. His fierce drive beat Turner and ended up in the net off the inside of the post.

Rushall continued to have the better of possession after the break, but Grantham defended well and the home side found no way through. The Gingerbreads showed some tenacity in the centre of the park. Danny Elliott won a good challenge to get the ball to Rhys Lewis. He fed Jamie McGhee but his shot flew wide of the mark.

McGhee was on the end of a good move a minute later when Elliott and T. J. Nightingale held the ball well. McGhee went past a couple of challenges but again lifted his shot wide.

Just after the hour mark, the home side got their noses in front. Haynes was given too much space to come forward on the Grantham left. He took on Ridley and fired in a low cross into the Gingerbreads six-yard box. Craddock slid in at the far post to bundle the ball over the line.

Two minutes later, Rushall repeated the trick but this time Craddock had moved a fraction too soon and the effort was ruled out by an offside flag.

When Grantham got forward to try and get back on level terms, they could not get anyone in the right place to make the most of good work by Nightingale, then a shot from Nathan Watson was deflected wide.

As the game wore on, the Grantham defence became their own worst enemies. After 70 minutes, a poor clearance from Hawes gave Obeng the chance to nip in before Turner could get to the ball. The Rushall striker had an open goal to aim at, but rolled the ball wide of the far post.

Obeng overplayed another chance before Grantham gifted the home side a third goal. Turner failed to clear his lines quickly enough as he was closed down by a lively Rushall front line. The ball squirted into the centre of the penalty area where Hakeem Islam had two efforts blocked before Craddock forced in his second of the afternoon.

Islam was a handful for the Grantham defence late on, creating two more scoring chances that Grantham desperately cleared.

Lewis had a late chance for Grantham when Watson and Ridley made room on the left. Ridley picked out Lewis on the edge of the Rushall penalty area, but his low shot went just past Gemmell’s post.

Grantham Town: Turner, Hannigan, Ridley, Meikle, Hawes, Lewis, Elliott (Purcicoe, 66), Nwadike, Watson, Smith (Nightingale, 52), McGhee (MacVicar, 66). Subs not used: Carchedi, Smith. Att: 186.

Grantham Court: Woman stole days after walking free from court

$

A woman who received a suspended prison sentence committed two shop thefts just days after walking free from court.

The court was told Nicola Coggin, of Templeway Square in Caythorpe, has 56 previous offences recorded against her including 28 for theft.

Coggin, 35, was sentenced to 12 weeks in custody suspended for 12 months on February 6 for three offences of theft and one of breaching a restraining order.

On February 11 she stole a Gillette razor from Boots in Grantham and a Lynx deodorant and body wash
from Poundstretcher in Grantham.

The court heard both thefts were carried out to enable Coggin to buy food and pay for her drug habit.

Chris Pye-Smith, defending, conceded Coggin was in a “precarious position” but argued against her being sent to prison.

Mr Pye-Smith said that at the time of the latest offences Coggin was homeless and “obviously using drugs and offending for that reason”.

However, Mr Pye-Smith said Coggin is benefitting from no longer living in Grantham and has submitted a clean drugs test.

Magistrates decided against activating the suspended sentence due to the progress Coggin has made kicking her drugs habit.

Coggin was warned that the risk of the suspended sentence being activated is still there.

Chair of magistrates Ros Gulson said: “You should be absolutely clear that this is hanging over you.”

Coggin was sentenced to a 14-day curfew between 7pm and 7am.

She was also ordered to pay a £60 surcharge.

A man “with more than 60 years’ driving experience” admitted driving without due care and attention after causing a crash on the A1 at Skillington.

David Cressey, 76, of Parklands Drive in Harlaxton, pulled out from the central reservation on the dual carriageway and was hit from behind by another car.

Cressey admitted the offence via a letter to the court.

He wrote: “It seems I was in the wrong and pulled out too early into the carriageway, causing the collision.

“I must have paid too much attention to the HGV and did not see the car.”

Cressey added: “I apologise to the young lady and the public for my error.”

The court heard the other driver in the collision suffered bruising to her chest, back and neck.

Cressey was fined £200 and must pay a £20 surcharge and £43 in costs.

He also received five points on his licence.

RUGBY: Kesteven record another emphatic victory against East Retford

Midlands League 3

Kesteven 36

East Retford 0

Conditions were not good for open rugby as rain fell on a muddy Woodnook pitch on Saturday.

Kesteven were intent on running the visitors off their feet, taking tap penalties rather than the conventional kick to touch. Scoring chances were few and far between. Retford had two penalty attempts that failed and Kesteven were rewarded with a single penalty goal by Parker after 30 minutes.

Kesteven started the second half with the benefit of the wind. The first half effort had taken its toll on the visitors and the home pack started to dictate. Retford had scrum five metres from their own line. The Kesteven pack went for broke and drove the visiting back over the line. Cowley came up with the ball as the scorer of the first try. Parker kicked the conversion.

Three minutes later, Danny Turner went clear and ran in for try number two. Parker’s kick was good again to open up the gap to 17-0.

The home side were on song now with the forwards winning more possession and the third try came from this domination. Peabody and Midgely worked the ball over the line with Peabody getting the try. Parker kept up his kicking record to take the score to 24-0.

The forwards were on top again for the bonus point try. First Turner was stopped inches short before Mark Dent squeezed in at the corner after another drive. This time Chris Galloway took over the kicking duties to land a superb goal from the touchline.

Goodrich made the early running to clear space for Jake Hughes to run in for the final try and seal another emphatic win.

Kesteven: Galloway, Whittaker, J. Hughes, Goodrich, P. Jordan, Parker, Dent, Sheardown, Brown, Purvis, Pert, Cowley, Peabody, Midgely, Turner. Reps: Odams, G. Smith, O Hughes.
