Grantham Amateur Boxing Club’s season is now well under way with three members taking part in the Novice Championships.

Carl Fletcher took on D. Packer (Bilborough ABC) in the cruiserweight division of the Notts and Lincs Final at Mansfield Miners Welfare Club.

Carl started well and during the first round was the sharper of the two, catching Packer with some nice combination punches. Packer came back stronger in the second round.

The third round was crucial and Carl found himself caught on the ropes and covering up. This was to be his downfall and the bout was awarded to the Bilborough man.

The semi-final of the light-middleweight division saw Grantham’s Nathan Wallace take on Jordan Wilkes of Scunthorpe ABC.

Nathan stamped his authority on the fight from the first bell and caught Wilkes with a stunning right hand, sending him stumbling back towards the ropes.

Nathan pushed on and took a unanimous points decision after he completely outclassed his Scunthorpe opponent.

Nathan came up against Grimsby ABC’s Joshua Raworth in the final at RAF Cranwell.

Up against a more experienced opponent, Nathan nevertheless took the bout to the Grimsby boxer, landing some heavy blows to body and head.

Raworth responded in the second round with a long left-hand jab but Nathan coped well and racked up some more points.

The tempo was raised in the third round and both began to hit their target. But Raworth tired as the fourth round began and Nathan landed some more great shots which were rewarded with another unanimous points decision.

Winning the final landed Nathan a place in the East Midlands Final in Mansfield, where Grantham ABC stablemate Terry Bennett, who received a bye to become Notts and Lincs champion, will contest the welterweight division.
