BOTTESFORD rower Callum Jones was back on the water last Saturday, competing for the first time since rowing in the Junior World Championships in August.

The 17-year-old has been concentrating on single oar rowing and it is now more than two years since Callum competed as a sculler (two blades).

Callum was stroking for his St Edward’s School (Oxford) quad at the Reading Small Boats Head over the 3.7km River Thames course.

They were the fastest boat of 142 in the morning with a time of 11min 0.70sec, which included a 10-second penalty for clipping the blades of another boat as they were overtaking.

Rowing again as one of 129 boats in the afternoon, Callum’s quad achieved the best time of the day, recording 10min 58.74sec to earn them the title ‘Head of the River’.
