TENNIS: Juniors bring silverware home to Grantham

GRANTHAM Tennis Club juniors walked away with plenty of trophies at the recent Lincolnshire Closed Junior Tournament held at Boston last week.

Madison Cook won all four matches in her group in the girls’ nine-and-under event as did Jake Gibbons in the boys’ eight-and-under event.

Both players then played great tennis in the finals but were narrowly beaten. Madison lost 8-6 7-3 to Lucy Evans from David Lloyd Burton Waters and Jake lost 10-8 to William Cheer from Boston.

Dominic Newcombe, 14, although beaten in the first round of the main draw, went on to  win the consolation event in a very close match (7-6, 6-7,10-6) against Boston’s Michael Clarke.

Thomas White also performed well, beating two higher ranked players, but ultimately lost in the quarter finals to the number four seed, 6-0 6-3.

Dominic (paired up at the last minute with Boston’s Zachary McDonnell Woods, 14, also went on to win the 14-and-under boys’ doubles tournament in straight sets against Felix Beech and Michael Clarke (6-1, 6-3).

A thrilling match was played in the 18-and-under boys’ doubles with Grantham’s Andrew Isaac, 15, paired with Sebastian Darke of Boston against the number one seeds Dominic Beesley, 17, and Henry Beesley, 14. The match finished 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Andrew and Seb played exceptionally well to beat players ranked two (Dom) and 20 (Henry) in their age groups in the country.

l The tennis week started with the men’s summer 5th team facing Sleaford at Grantham.

The team of David Hall and Mike Roys, Michael Cragg and Dominic Newcombe and Joe Patton and Bradleigh Picker narrowly lost to a strong team.

At the weekend the men’s first team travelled to Burton Waters in the hope of continuing their good winning form.

The team included Richard Cragg and Simon Cormer, Ed Milner and Dave Blanchard and James Drennan and Darren Taxis, who got beaten convincingly against a strong side.

Sunday saw a change of fortunes for the Grantham teams with the mixed doubles first team facing East Bridgeford away and winning by 11 sets to six.

The team was made up of Lianne Tapson and James Drennan, Richard Cragg and Sarah Patton and Daniel Mole and Mell Milner.

The mixed fourth team couldn’t continue Sunday’s form against Sutton Bonnington. Lorraine Walton and David Todd, Nigel Birch and Jill Pindar and Paul Kennedy and Sue Rowland lost 15 sets to three.

Grantham’s ladies first team hosted Collingham and won a fantastic game four sets to two. The winning team included Mell Milner and Mell Bloodworth, Liz Isles and Charlotte Palul and Pam Aust and Liz Frobisher.

In another mixed match the third mixed team finished the season unbeaten with a 101 games to 34 victory over Nettleham. The team were Rob Isaac and Yvonne Walker, Dave Todd and Liz Hewitt and Mark Ottey and Laura Dixon.

Finally, the ladies in division 5A enjoyed a comfortable victory over Caunton C. The team included Elaine Maplethorpe and Jackie Thomson, Kathy Smith and Carol Binz and Laura Dixon and Rachel Pulfree. They finished the match with 16 sets - only dropping two.
