GRANTHAM Town will lift the league championship trophy at The Meres on Saturday - so why not show your appreciation by getting along to this weekend’s game?
The Gingerbreads will face second-placed Ilkeston FC this Saturday but with the title already in the bag the real draw will be the chance to see Grantham captain Ben Saunders lift the league championship trophy.
Chairman of Grantham Town Supporters’ Club Tony Fraher is hoping the game will see a record crowd for the season - beating the attendance of 502 recorded against Stamford on Boxing Day. Mr Fraher said: “Ilkeston are looking to bring 250 to 300 for the game and we don’t want the people of Grantham to be out-shouted so we need people to come along and join in.
“The support means an awful lot of the players. Having the fans behind them and a big crowd really helps them raise their game and gives them a lift.”
The club is riding the crest of a wave at the moment and team officials hope to capitalise on the good feeling around the town to increase the stature of Grantham Town.
Mr Fraher said: “The success of the football team really relates to the “Grantham is Great” campaign because success on the pitch can help get Grantham’s name out there both in the East Midlands and nationally.
“People want to be associated with the club and we are getting more potential sponsors wanting to be involved.”
It is hoped next season’s step up in standard will see the return of some fans who have stayed away in recent years.
Mr Fraher said: “Last time we were relegated to a lower league I think some people stopped coming to watch the club.
“Hopefully this summer will see the return of fans coming to watch Grantham again.
“Next year we could be playing sides like FC United and local games against sides like Worksop.”
