Bottesford rower 16-year-old Callum Jones has retained his place in the Great Britain Junior (under-19) team by being selected to row in the Munich International Regatta at the German Olympic rowing lake in May.

Selection for the Great Britain rowing teams at all levels is by a series of long and demanding tests. Having achieved qualifying times on the indoor rowing machine, and performed well in the early identification trials over 5km at Boston in February, Callum was invited as one of 48 under-19 sweep oar rowers in Britain to trials over four days at Holme Pierrepont.

With one day washed out because of the storms last Wednesday, during the other three days all the hopefuls were required to row a total of 20 races in pairs or fours at the end of which a team of 12 was chosen.

Then followed another two days of training with the selected team on the River Thames based at Hampton.

Callum has been rowing since he was first introduced to an indoor rowing machine at school when 11-years-old.

Some six weeks later he was British Indoor Rowing Champion for his age. Since then he has rowed for Newark and Nottingham Rowing Clubs.

Last year Callum stroked the Great Britain coxless four in the Junior World Championships.
