THE A1 near Long Bennington reopened at around 6pm last night (Monday) after a man was talked down from a bridge.
The road was closed in both directions for much of the afternoon as a result of concerns for the safety of the man on the bridge over the road.
A police spokesman said officers were concerned that the man may try and commit suicide.
He said: “They closed the A1 in both directions to minimise the risk to members of the public in passing vehicles.”
Officers called negotiators and after ‘lengthy negotiations’ the man handed himself over to the officers.
There were several miles of tailbacks in both directions with travellers on the A1 northbound standing on the carriageway while diversions put in place.
