A BOTTESFORD teenager went a step closer to retaining his place in the Great Britain junior under-19 team when he competed in the GB Junior Long Distance Trials at Boston last weekend.

Sixteen-year-old Callum Jones finished ninth in the trials last year, after which Callum went on to represent GB in the junior world championships.

As his pairs partner of last year was now overage, Callum formed a new pairing with his fellow St Edward’s School rower Titus Morley.

Rowing the five-kilometre course on the River Witham against 41 other pairs all competing for international selection, Callum and Titus finished in a very satisfying third place on Saturday.

The following day they were again on the water, rowing another five kilometres and finishing in fifth place, only three seconds behind third place.

Callum is now waiting with some optimism to hear whether he has been selected for four days intensive trials at Holme Pierrepont in April, which is the next stage in the process of representing Great Britain later in the year.

This weekend Callum is rowing in his school eight in the Reading University Head on the River Thames.
