EAST Midlands Schools Gymnastics Championships were held in Stamford on Saturday.

Grantham now has three schools who will go through to the National finals in May, in four different categories.

In the boys, competitions, Priory Ruskin Academy produced very good vaulting scores in both the under-13 and under-19 age groups.

But the slightly higher and more consistent floor scores from King’s School gave them the overall titles, to finish ahead of Priory Ruskin for a place in the finals.

Priory Ruskin did however manage to take first place in the under-19 mixed event, and will be hoping to continue their success in the finals at Stoke.

In the under-19 girls’ competition, Walton performed very well considering that they lost one girl before the day through illness and then an injury on floor in the first round reduced the team to only four members.

They still managed a creditable second place behind Sir John Gleed, and 0.3 ahead of Spalding in third. KGGS had two teams who placed sixth and seventh respectively.

In the final group, Walton and KGGS A were placed second and third respectively after floor, with only 0.1 between them. Following the second rotation, Sir John Gleed produced some outstanding vaults to take the top spot, with KGGS A also working well on vault to finally finish second. Walton dropped to fifth.

St Mary’s managed to retain their title from last year in the primary competition, beating Stamford in a closely fought competition.

Stamford proved to be better on the floor, whereas the St Mary’s strength lay in the vaulting. At the end of the competition only 1.1 separated the two teams, with St Mary’s going through to the finals for the third successive year.
