Remorseful Paul Bavister was sentenced to unpaid work after attacking an ambulance and being ejected from a hospital.
Bavister admitted causing £395 worth of criminal damage to property owned by East Midlands Ambulance Service and causing without reasonable excuse a nuisance or disturbance on NHS premises.
The 40-year-old, who lives in Kinoulton Court, Grantham, got drunk at his niece’s party before falling down the stairs and knocking himself unconscious on a child safety gate.
Paramedics arrived to take Bavister to hospital at around 3.40am but found him to be aggressive and abusive so contacted police. The officers accompanied Bavister in the ambulance on the way to Lincoln County Hospital and found his demeanour initially improved.
Daniel Pietryka, prosecuting, said: “During the transportation he started to become compliant so was released from the handcuffs. But shortly afterwards he grabbed hold of a cable from the Lifepak machine which was monitoring his condition and bit through the cable, revealing the optic cables within.”
Once they arrived at the hospital Bavister continued to be abusive to both police and staff within earshot of other members of the public. Mr Pietryka said the behaviour was so bad staff were “unable to assist or treat him and he was discharged from the hospital”.
Bavister blamed alcohol and his cousin for his behaviour, saying he believed his cousin was “doubling up his drinks without him knowing”.
Rory Macmillan, defending, said Bavister is “embarrassed and ashamed” of his actions.
Mr Macmillan added: “He feels his behaviour that evening was out of character due to the amount of alcohol he consumed and the accident and injury he had suffered.
“He apologised in full in his interview and apologised separately to police officers at the police station.”
Bavister was sentenced to 100 hours of unpaid work and must pay £174 in compensation.
Chair of magistrates Miss Jennings said: “We have taken into account your remorse and shame and the fact you have apologised to the police.”
