The national GMB union has donated £2,000 to the Grantham Foodbank - enough money to pay for 2,000 meals.

The Grantham branch of the union put forward Grantham Foodbank as a charity for the GMB to support and the head office gave its support.

Brian Hanbury of Grantham Foodbank said: “We’re massively pleased they have chosen our project from all of the projects across the country.

“I think they recognise the hardship in the area.”

Mr Hanbury has seen a steady increase in reliance on the Foodbank with new faces seeking help every week.

He said: “The numbers are still steadily rising. Last Wednesday and Friday we were distributing out on the street because of the sheer volume of people and the space we have within the building.

“People are coming in gluts.”

The Foodbank estimates the money donated by the GMB and raised through the recent cycle ride in Grantham will help keep the project going for another three or four months.

However, there are other fund-raising projects in the pipeline, details of which will soon be released.
