STOKE ROCHFORD

Twenty-one-year-old Nick Watson from Stoke Rochford will be heading to America later this year after winning the final Faldo Series UK Championship of 2013 at Notts Golf Club (Hollinwell).

He shot 69, the lowest round of the tournament, on the final day to finish two shots clear, having scored a par 72 previously, to book his place in the 17th final at The Greenbrier in West Virginia on October 22-24.

Afterwards, Nick commented: “This victory means alot because there were a number of top players in the field. I can’t wait to get out there.”

He was in second place after the first round and raced to four under in the first nine. A solid back nine saw him end the tournament three-under, two shots ahead of Matthew Fieldsend.

The Bank Holiday Stableford was won by 16 handicapper Dave Harris, three clear of the field with 45 points. Ben Rawspon was second with 42 and James Footitt third with 40. Kevin Bond hit a hole in one on the 195-yard par three seventh.

The following day, Robin Harris won the Bob Cullingham Memorial with a net 66 (-4) after scoring 72. Brian Delaney was second with a 66, Owen McHugh third with 67.

GREETHAM VALLEY

Seventy-plus years young Keith Heppenstall won the Midweek August Stableford on the par 68 Valley course with 41 points. Terry Dunlop was second, one of a trio of players who came in with 40 points.

Jordan Burdall, aged 19 with a handicap of plus one, has already won the scratch to 18 club championship and had to settle for third but did take the course record with a 63.

The record was held by Sam Sharpe, now assistant pro at Luffenham Heath, who set the mark at 65 several years ago.

Jordan worked the course well, only using his driver on the two par fives. He mostly used a three iron off the tee and his putter was working well. His next target is the Lakes course reord, currently held by club captain Trevor Smith.

Bryony Batch won the Ladies’ August Stableford on the Lakes course with 38 points. Cathy Steele was second after going in the water on the last.
