The annual Grantham Junior Open concluded at the town’s Arnoldfield courts on Saturday.
Hosted by Grantham Tennis Club, hundreds of matches were played throughout the week-long competition, with players from all over the country competing in the Grade Three regional event.
Grantham’s players enjoyed a successful week in a lot of different events. Andrew Isaac made the 16-and-under boys’ final by beating three higher rated players, but ultimately lost in a very close and windy final tie-break on Saturday.
Jacob Cullen played well in a very strong Mini Red (eight-and-under) event, while James Peace beat some astute players to finish runner-up of his group in the Mini Orange (nine-and-under) competition.
In adult events, Lianne Tapson won the ladies’ singles 6-0, 6-0, in a one-sided final. Sam Bass and Richard Cragg retained their title in the men’s doubles.
Megan Jones picked up two titles on finals day, winning the mixed doubles 18-and-under with Michael Cragg, and the girls’ doubles 18-and-under with Emma Mastin (Boston).
Other notable performances were made by Joe Patton and Lewis Picker, who came up just short in the 14-and-under boys’ doubles final, and Ella Tapson who made the 18-and-under girl’s doubles final.
The event was sponsored once again by Belvoir Fruit Farms.
l Grantham Tennis Club men’s fourth team hosted Sutton in Ashfield on Sunday and came out second best to a strong team.
Comprising Paul Kennedy, Mike Roys, Dale Wright, Barry Priestley, David Todd and Mark Farmer, Grantham lost 13-5.
The men’s second team also played at home against Gainsborough and came up just short with a 5-4 loss. The team were Ed Milner, Andrew Isaac, Josh King, Toby King, Richard Smart and Mark Harris.
