This year’s A-level pass rate failed to beat the 99.5 per cent record set last year at King’s School in Grantham, but 98.2 per cent is still good news.

Headmaster Frank Hedley said the results are “richly deserved by a year group of students who have worked very hard”.

He added: “I am immensely proud of the boys and wish them happiness and success in the next phase of their education and employment.”

Thirty-one per cent of students gained A* or A grades, while 62 per cent gained A* - B grades.

Star pupil this year was Riaz Fazal, who got four A*s and one A. He said: “I’m ecstatic at my grades. I’m going to take a year out and get a job, then reapply next year for university. I will definitely be celebrating tonight.”
