PLANS for a drive-thru KFC restaurant to be built on the site of a soon to be demolished pub were rejected by councillors on Tuesday.

The restaurant would have been built where the Isaac Newton pub currently stands in Harlaxton Road. Permission has already been granted to demolish the pub.

Councillors on South Kesteven District Council’s development control committee objected to the plans because of the appearance, possible anti-social behaviour problems, littering and concerns over the access road.

Coun Adam Stokes said the restaurant’s appearance would not be in keeping with the character of the area.

He added: “I complained as soon as I saw the plans as it looks like Domino’s or Sally’s in London Road.”

Coun Charmaine Morgan said she was worried about an increase in anti-social behaviour in the area causing more work for the police.

She said: “Chief Inspector Housley told me his resources are already fully-stretched at our last meeting together.”

The committee received 16 letters of objection to the proposed new restaurant on a variety of issues. Some voiced concerns about a fast-food restaurant being situated so close to a primary and a secondary school while another wrote “Grantham’s population is already obese”, adding that an increase would “affect life-expectancy”.

Councillors voted by nine votes to three with one abstention in favour of rejecting the plans.
