ANGRY councillors threw out a developer’s plans to build eight homes on the site of the old Shirley Croft Hotel in Harrowby Road.

Councillors were disgruntled after suggestions made by the development control committee at a previous planning meeting were ignored by developers.

The committee had asked that some of the homes be built as single storey buildings but when the revised plans were resubmitted they were still two-storey.

Coun Adam Stokes hit out at the developers who indicated to planning officers prior to the meeting that they will not be making any further amendments.

Coun Stokes said: “I’m not going to accept this and if the developer is not happy, he knows where he can go.”

The committee was told the plans were unpopular with people living in Croft Drive and St Vincent’s Road.

Speaker Jim Smith said: “All they seem to care about is making money. They aren’t thinking about the affect on other people’s gardens and properties.

“They have made no real effort to abide by the rulings of this committee.”

The demolition of the Shirley Croft Hotel has already been given the green light. Speakers and committee members were in general agreement that they accepted the land needs development but were unhappy at the developers lack of flexibility.

Coun Mike Cook said: “We realise it’s got to be developed but surely there’s a compromise. All we are asking for is that four buildings be bungalows as requested.”

Councillors voted unanimously in favour of rejecting the developer’s proposal, citing an adverse impact on neighbours and a loss of privacy as reasons.
