A councillor said she was “stunned” that 55 homes are to be built on allotment land when there is “so much demand for allotment land in the county”.

Coun Judy Stevens was speaking as a member of South Kesteven District Council’s development control committee as it was considering a proposal to build on allotment land off Beacon Lane.

Coun Stevens said she was “absolutely stunned” at plans to build homes on a “really key point in Grantham”. She added: “When there is so much demand for allotments in the county I’m absolutely amazed these allotments have been apparently given up and are just going to be developed on.”

Coun Helen Powell reacted to news of more homes being built on the site - the previous application called for 43 homes - as “sheer madness”.

Coun Morgan said she feared for the impact on the already busy road system in the area. She said: “If we approve this it will lead to a log jam in this area. There are five or six schools in that area and at pick-up times it’s currently really bad. Adding this development will make that area absolutely dire.”

Coun Mark Ashberry hit back at criticism which appeared on the comments section of the Grantham Journal website after he had previously raised concerns about the speed of cars in the area.

He said: “When this was last discussed I highlighted the speeding round that bend which is very close to where the exit and entrance to the estate will be.

“Comments on the Grantham Journal website called myself and Councillor Morgan “scaremongers” but on that stretch of road in recent weeks there has been two accidents so clearly we were not scaremongering there.”

The plans were passed by 10 votes to four.
