Grantham Journal letter: Council does not deserve this criticism

I would like to respond to Peter Clawson’s letter (Journal, May 17) about Lincolnshire County Council (LCC) not doing enough for Grantham Museum, as it is unfortunately wildly inaccurate.

May I firstly say that Peter’s comments about the museum making his writers group welcome is appreciated, and we are grateful for his and the group’s support.

That said, he is wrong in his accusations, as LCC has been nothing but hugely supportive of the museum since its opening and we are continuously grateful for their time, advice and assistance. It is also important to point out that without financial support from LCC the museum would not be here today.

We have worked closely with them on the Dam Busters exhibition and they have been nothing but helpful in allowing us to display the items we requested from their collection. What items the museum chose to request from the LCC collection may not be to Peter’s taste, but the feedback from the general public has been nothing but positive.

The relationship we have built with LCC has resulted in a superb exhibition the museum and the town are rightly proud of, and the continued media coverage for the museum is proof of the true success of this ‘Big Society’ project.

We are looking forward to continuing to work with both LCC and South Kesteven District Council long into the future, and encourage members of the public to have the facts before criticising such a success story.

The Dam Busters exhibition is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 4pm until July, and I invite everyone to come along to support the museum, and to remember those from 617 Squadron who were so brave and to whom we owe so much.

Helen Goral

Chairman, Grantham Museum
