Grantham Billiard Club’s Over-50s Handicap League has seen a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for one player this season.
Eighty-one-year-old John Burch finished bottom of the table in last season’s league – but this year claimed the winner’s trophy.
John, who has been playing snooker for more than 30 years, said he thought the reason for his marked improvement could be put down to the laser eye surgery he had last year.
He said: “I had my eyes done for cataracts in August. These days my highest break is only about 27. I am the oldest in the league but I enjoy it. It’s an afternoon out.”
Also making a name for himself, Alan Sheppard made his mark by finishing as runner-up to John in his debut season in the league.
