GOLF: Belton Park defend title in first round of county competition

BELTON PARK

As defending champions of the gents’ scratch county singles competition, the Bramley Singles, Belton Park defeated Stoke Rochford away in the first round last Tuesday with the team comprising Leon Bell, Chris Burns and Matt Haynes.

l The gents’ first team then beat Stoke Rochford 3½-2½ at home on Saturday, however the seconds lost 5-1 at Stoke.

l Belton Park held its Gents’ Spring Open on Sunday, with a full field of 64 pairs.

The morning competition, the Rothwell Lee Cup foursomes stableford, was won by S. Lambourne (Belton Park) and J, Bexton (Wollaton Park), ahead of R. Shaw (Carden Park) and D. Woods (Belton Woods) who triumphed in the afternoon’s Hemswell Cup betterball stableford. Runners-up were A. Sears (Wollaton Park) and M. Horton (Wollaton Park).

Belton Park names first – Tony Davies and Ian Carrol lost to Tim Hawkins and Frank Hinch 2&1, John Jalland and Laurence Haselhurst beat Trevor Hubbert and Andrew Matthews 4&3, Jason Hose and Richard Claxton lost to Bruce Strickland and Geoff Woolley 3&2, Simon Denton and Ross Denton halved with Keith Goodacre and Michael Fish, Robert Pask and Andy Trotter beat Bill Skinner and Steve Herbert 3&2, Stuart Smith and David Capindale lost to Wayne Terrett and Mark Haynes 6&5.

Seniors’ section

The Geoff Timson Trophy for seniors’ past captains had an entry of 10 and was won by Tony Noble with a score of 38.

Runner-up on 35 was Wes Wright and Terry Bond (32) was third. Best front nine was Mike Goodacre with 17 and Bill Selby won the back nine with the same score.

Tuesday’s Yellow Ball Team Competition saw the result go to countback, with three teams tied on a score of 114.

Winners were John Carey, Norman Halliday and Ron Prothero, ahead of runners-up Dave Atkinson, Gary Head and Brian Mole, and third placed Wes Wright, Tony Noble and Tony Rowley.

Bill Brogan and Norman Halliday halved, Ray Clarke and Fred Williams won 1 up, Alan Addis and Manny Barker won 3&2, Tony Davies and Peter Hawkins won 3&2, Ian Saunders and Andrew Cookson lost 9&7, Colin Farrington and Dave Martin lost 2&1, Willie Baudrum and David Langley lost 4&2, Shaun Boney and Laurence Haselhurst lost 5&4, Brian Mole and John Alsbury lost 3&2, Michael Goodacre and Tom Brindley lost 6&4.

STOKE ROCHFORD

The May Monthly Medal was a competitive affair but very few could get anywhere near Simon Yelland’s score of net 65, which was good enough to win by two shots. Lowest gross was Roger Rawson’s two over par 72.

Results: 1 Simon Yelland 65, 2 David Metheringham 67, 3 Terence Haggerty 67.

The Bank Holiday Bogey was won by Steve Buckley, with Jon Senescall and Paul Knapp second and third respectively.

Other results: May Midweek Stableford – 1 Tom Keegan 44, 2 Michael Rance 42, 3 Alan Jessop 40.

President’s Shield – 1 Mark Bell +4, 2 Jack Greenfield +2, 3 Barrie Griffin +2.

Martin Bellamy and Andy Edwards halved, Ian Dobson and Andrew Tildesley won 3&2, Bob Bennett and Ben Boot won 4&3, Graham Miller and Giles Gill won 2&1, Brian White and Eddie Plant halved.

Seniors’ section

Stoke Rochford seniors played the second of six rounds of their Summer Trophy competition.

Winner was seniors captain Mick Rance with 42 points, Alan Jessop was second with 40, and Roger Nicholls third with 38 points on countback from three others.

Overall leader is Jim Price with a two round total of 75, ahead of Mick Rance 74 and Mike Nixon 72.

Mick Rance and Mike Graves won 5&4, Barry Coop and Alan Jessop won 3&2, Eddie Plant and Ken Taylor halved, Greg Ewart and Mike Nixon won 6&5, Brian White and Keith Eddy lost 3&2, Malcolm Edwards and Roy Rowe lost 2&1, Don Werner and Tim Haward won 4&3, John Wright and Cliff Mills lost 3&1.

Ladies’ section

Results: Silver Rose 0-20 handicap – Judy Rawson net 71; Marlow Midway 21-28 handicap – Lynn Ewart net 77; Leverett Cup 29-36 handicap – Ruth Greenfield net 76; overall gross Pam Watson 79; EG Medal – 1 Sue Booth net 70, 2 Avis Green 72, 3 Doris Kent 73, lowest gross – Pam Watson 77; Bursnal Cup – 1 Sue Taylor 44, 2 Elaine Kirby 35, 3 Avis Griffin, lowest gross – Pam Watson.

SUDBROOK MOOR

Sue Chambers enjoyed a win in the Tuesday ladies’ roll-up, her 34 point card beating Sue Hutton on countback, with Elaine Shurton in third.

Sue and three other ladies joined the field of 31 gents in the mixed senior stableford, and her 40 point caard gave her the best return in Category 4 and 5. Bob Watson’s 41 was best of Category 1-3, but overall winner was David Leslie with 42 points.

The twos sweep was shared by Ken Jameson and Eric Dickens.

l The scratch A Team recorded another solid 4½-1½ home victory over Thorney Lakes in the South Lincs League.

l The Senior League team travelled to Kirton Holme, Boston, where they halved in their first match of the season.
