A man who was given what he thought were sleeping pills from someone at his local gym was “very susprised” to be told by police they were actually Class A drugs.
Nicholas Brooks of Kedleston Road in Grantham admitted possession of a Class A drug after he was stopped by police on December 30.
Brooks, 24, was found to be carrying a white powder and two purple pills. The powder was legally obtained but the purple pills were sent away for testing after Brooks told officers they were sleeping pills.
However the results showed they were in fact morphene - a Class A drug.
Bill Frasier, defending, said Brooks got the drugs at his gym.
He said: “He had been complaining he had a bad back and difficulty sleeping so someone said ‘take these two pills to help you sleep’.
“He took them, assuming they were sleeping pills. He was very surprised to find they were morphene.
“He had no chance to take them as they were seized by police the same day.”
Brooks was fined £110. He must also pay £85 in costs and a £20 surcharge.
Magistrates also ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the morphene.
