It looks to have been a record year at the Belton International Horse Trials, with more than 15,000 people through the gates - up 30 per cent.

The three-day event in the grounds of Belton House has been hailed a success by organiser Bede Events, which saw Zara Phillips compete on Sunday, alongside many other London 2012 competitors.

The final day of competition saw the culmination of the prestigious Grantham Cup. The top 10 was dominated by British-based Italian Vittoria Panizzon, who won the Grantham Cup title on 10-year-old grey mare Borough Pennyz. This was her ride at the London Games. She also took third place on Rock Model, as well as eighth place on Merlots Magic.

Vittoria said: “I am absolutely thrilled with all three horses. Borough Pennyz finds everything so easy, whilst Rock Model felt fantastic aged 18. I rode Merlots Magic first of the three; he gave me such a great round considering he is quite green at this level.”

Bede Events spokesman Darren Bungay said of Sunday: “It was a great day out for all, a very windy but dry day provided ideal conditions for spectators and competitors alike.”

As well as watching competitors, families were able to enter their dogs into an agility competition, browse stalls and view motors displayed by the Grantham Classic Car Club. Sunday also saw the Grantham Cup 10k run.
