As millions of people around the world watched the funeral of Baroness Thatcher, Granthamian Louis Maier was having the final touches put on a piece of artwork which will remain with him for the rest of his own life.
Last week we brought you Louis’ Mr Whippy-inspired Margaret Thatcher tattoo but now we can show it you the artwork on his calf completed at The Tattoo Shop in Commercial Road by tattooist Darren Paddison. The work on adding colour began at around 11.30am and took two hours to finish.
The connection between Margaret Thatcher and Mr Whippy ice cream was even mentioned by the Bishop of London during the funeral service.
He said: “Beginning in the upper floors of her father’s grocer’s shop in Grantham, through Oxford as a scientist and, later, as part of the team that invented Mr Whippy ice cream, she embarked upon a political career.”
The tattoo has had plenty of reaction, some positive and some negative, and lots of interest online around the world.
Darren said: “We are artists. We want to create debate and that’s what we have done.”
