Car turned over after hitting pot hole on Gorse Lane near Grantham

A teenage driver was lucky to escape without injury after her car hit a deep pot hole on Gorse Lane early this morning and flipped her car on to its side.

The car travelled 50 feet on its side before ending back on its wheels in a hedge at the side of the road. Driver Zoe Powis, 18, of Waltham-on-the-Wolds, was driving to work at Aldi in Grantham when the accident happened at 4.45am.

Miss Powis was driving around a sharp bend in the road at Hungerton, in dark and misty conditions, when her Fiat Punto struck the hole and was flung on to its side. The rear and side windows were smashed and the font wheels were burst.

An ambulance and police arrived at the scene. Miss Powis was shaken by the incident but did not need treatment.

Miss Powis, who has worked at Aldi for fourth months, said: “It was really bad coming round that corner. It was quite misty and then I don’t know what happened. I thought the car had rolled over, but it went on its side, spun around and ended up in a ditch.”

Her mother, Margaret, who went to the scene soon afterwards, said: “She is really shook up. She is really lucky not to be badly hurt. I am going to get on to the council about this. Something needs to be done urgently. She is a sensible driver and this is a terrible road.”

The Journal recently reported the complaints of drivers and members of the Witham Wheelers cycling club who use Gorse Lane. They say there are so many pot holes in the road that drivers are foced to move into the middle of the road forcing them into oncoming traffic. Cyclists are concerned that by hitting a pot hole there could be a serious injury, possibly throwing them into the path of a car or lorry.
