Grantham Journal letter: Thatcher did not represent Grantham

I feel that I must write about the proposed statue of Margaret Thatcher.

I was always under the impression that a statue was erected to a person who not only did make great contributions to the local community and world achievement, but was well liked by the locals. But, reading all letters about her, this doesn’t seem to be the case.

The reason being that not once in all her career did she represent Grantham, and the only time she returned here was to sign her book. Even then, the turnout was, to her, disappointing. So her only claim to Grantham is that she was born here.

Even the law on mobility scooters, brought in by her government (going over four miles per hour on the path), was an arrestable offence. It was a Grantham person, who was the first to get fined, yet cyclists are riding on the path at more than five miles per hour every single day.

There are probably even more snubs that she has made to Grantham that I’ve forgotten.

People who have served our community and are well respected by all who knew them, would be Gladys Foster, (Uncle) Harry Sanders, Jeff Wise and Vince Eager.
