Four lads from a Grantham school have plenty to boast about to their mates.

Even though the four teenagers from the Phoenix School are too young to drive, they have built their own car.

The boys were adding the finishing touches to the Caterham 7 two-seater this week, under the expert eye of tutor Dale Dixon.

Dale and the boys are proud of their achievement in assembling the vehicle in just 10 months, working only a couple of hours, one afternoon a week.

The parts for the vehicle arrived from the kit car manufacture in boxes at the school’s engineering unit at Witham Brook industrial estate, along with a chassis and set of instructions.

The students - Sheldon Johnson, Bailey Chapman, Natham West and jack Swinock - then had the job of bolting it all together, and also dealing with some paperwork.

Dale said the most difficult part of the project was the fiddly job on installing the engine and gearbox, but that the team had gained a lot of satisfaction as they made good progress on the build.

He said: “The lads really engaged in the project and have gained a real sense of achievement.”

“The car will now go back to the Caterham Cars factory.
