A cow which escaped this afternoon from a field near Grantham’s Wyndham Park has been shot by police marksmen.
The Belgian blue female got out of the field just after 2.30pm, and made its way across town to the Princess Drive area.
Sergeant Adrian Wootten told the Journal that the cow had charged at several members of the public and a police officer, before jumping the fence into the car park of Belton Lane Children’s Centre.
He said it posed a danger to public safety and there was no other option than to shoot it dead.
A first shot fire from atop a large white van parked near to the children’s centre missed. The van was driven around the corner to get officers closer and the second shot fired, killing the cow as onlookers stood by.
Sergeant Wootten said children and staff had been evacuated and moved to a safer area while the operation was taking place.
