Ejection seats
Aviation Society
The society will holds its monthly meeting on Tuesday at Great Gonerby Social Club, High Street, 7.30pm for an 8.pm start.
This month’s talk will be given by Geoff Dyer, who will pass on his personal anecdotes of an ejection seat pilot. Geoff undertook flight development testing on a range of ejection seats both for retro-fits on exisiting aircraft and for prototype/new production aircraft.
After the talk a 10-minute DVD, produced by Geoff, will be shown, which includes original footage of the first live ejection and test shots from the 1950s to the 1980s.
Bake-off
Fairtrade
On Saturday, March 9, Grantham Fairtrade Town Steering Group will present The Great Fairtrade Bake-Off!
The event will be held at the Baptist Church on Wharf Road at 2pm and there are prizes for the best cake.
There are three categories, under-11, 11-16 years and over 16. The classes are Victoria sponge, chocolate cake and fruit cake.
All entries must use a minimum of one Fairtrade ingredient.
Entry forms are available from the Guildhall, Panini, the Baptist Church (Wharf Road), Grantham College and the Journal office (High Street) and should be handed in by March 8 to enter.

Fashion show
Foodbank
A fashion show and sale will be held at Grantham College on Thursday, March 7, in aid of Grantham Foodbank.
The show starts at 7.30pm and will feature high street quality fashions in all sizes, at bargain prices.
Doors will open at 7pm. Tickets are £5, including a glass of wine, and are available from the Guildhall, Yes (The George Shopping Centre) and the Journal office on the High Street..
Support GROUPS
Hospice
Weekly bereavement support groups are held at St Barnabas Hospice on Barrowby Road.
On Wednesdays the group meet from 1.45pm to 3.45pm and an evening group meet on Thursdays from 7pm to 9pm.

Charity donation
Inner Wheel Club
Husbands were invited to
attend the club’s recent meeting at Belton Park Golf Club, many of whom joined members for a meal, followed by a talk from a fundraiser for the charity Help for Heroes.
She spoke about the charity’s involvement in helping men and women injured in conflict overseas, mainly in Afghanistan, and the support given to their families.
President, Margaret Wuidart presented a donation to the charity on behalf of the club.
Eight members from the club accepted an invitation from the Rotary Club of Grantham, to add a touch of sparkle to its Sergeant at Arms Secret Valentine’s Ball. They chose to perform Hey Big Spender. The evening included several of the Rotary Club’s ‘home grown’ acts.
Captivating talk
Ladies Probus Club
President, Ann Parsons, welcomed 35 members and three guests to Belton Park Golf Club on Tuesday, February 12.
After lunch members were captivated by some superb photography with musical accompaniment, provided by Richard Adams. He was thanked by Margaret Ashley.
Next meeting is on Tuesday, March 12, when the speaker will be Noel Farthing on the subject The Role of German Women in the War.

St John’s Fellowship
The speaker at the February meeting was the Rev David Shenton. He entertained members with a talk about his life, including his interest in both sport and amateur
dramatics. He was pleased to answer questions and discuss issues raised by the audience.
Members were reminded of the Women’s World Day of Prayer on Friday, March 1, when services will be held at Harrowby Lane Methodist Church at 10.30am and at St John’s Church, Manthorpe at 7pm.
At the next meeting on Tuesday, March 12, Roger Graves will give a talk on the Grantham Swimarathon.

Stroke Club
The club - for people who have suffered disablement from strokes - will meet on Thursday at Grantham Bowls Club (behind Sainsbury’s) from 10am to 2pm.
This month’s subject is Grantham Foodbank.

New patron
Talking Newspaper
At the last meeting of Grantham and District Talking Newspaper for the Blind, vice-chairman, Judith Parker, welcomed Malcolm Swinburn, chief executive of the South Lincs Blind Society, who said he would seek to ensure that a member of the society would attend future meetings of the Talking Newspaper.
The vice-chairman reported she had attended the First Contact meeting and left particulars with other organisations about the service provided by the Talking Newspaper. She thanked the members who helped to set up and man the display.
Lincs Community and Voluntary Services have agreed to update GTN’s details on its News Flash sheets in respect of readers and technicians needed.
Dr Gilmore, of the chairty Wilpeg, has said that GTN would be considered for financial support this year. Brief details of GTN’s history and work were provided, together with its ongoing need for CDs, tapes and wallets. The charity will meet in February and GTN will be advised of the outcome.
John Williams and Janet were thanked for all their celebration arrangements for the 30th anniversary of the association.
Editor of the Journal, Paul Richardson, has agreed to become a patron of the association.
The annual meeting will be held on Monday, May 13 at St Wulfram’s Church Hall.
Next meeting is on Monday, March 25 at 14 Wharf Road at 7.15pm.

World Day of Prayer
On Friday March 1, services to mark the Women’s World Day of Prayer will be held at Harrowby Lane Methodist Church at 10.30am and St John’s Church, Manthorpe at 7pm.
Everyone is welcome.
