GOLF: Belton Woods’ new captain holds charity competiion

Seniors’ section

New captain Alan Lowen held his first event in his term of office, which was the Captain’s Charity Day combined with the December Monthly Stableford.

John Williams scored a narrow victory, just one point ahead of David Toule.

Results: 1 John Williams 39, 2 David Toule 38, 3 Mike Learwood 36, 4 Mike Gulliford 36, 5 John Billot 35, 6 Pat Stamford 34 ocb, 7 Mike Whitington 34, 8 Ray Woodcock 33 ocb, 9 Phil Turrell 33, 10 Bob Clarke 32.

l The Marshall’s January Monthly Medal was won by Denis Manton on countback with net 73.

Belton Park

Belton Park Trustees’ Cup was contested on New Year’s Day, the format being a nine-hole stableford competition played with two clubs and a putter.

Thirty-one golfers took part and John Henson was a popular winner with an excellent score of 21 points. John Moseley was second with 19 points and Clive Horn third with 17.

Sudbrook Moor

A field of 42 contested the January main club Saturday qualifier, with Nigel Corby carding 38 points off his 11 handicap, equalling CSS.

Nigel is now clearly well in front in the overall Sword of Achievement Order of Merit with 46 points. Pete Martin, Rob Jameson and Simon Green fill the next three places.

Prizes on the qualifying day went to Michael Coupland, Andrew Green, Jim Garriock, Pete Martin and Kev Jones in Categories 1-3. Best of Category 4 was Martin Whistler, shared with Craig Machin, from Steve Squires and Malcolm Edwards.

Best lady was Caroline Davis on a splendid 37 points, equal second best card of the field. Mags McArthur was runner-up on 31 points. Best young junior was 42 handicap Robert Eldred, from Joseph Ablewhite.

The twos sweep was shared between Ian Reah, Nigel Corby and Graham Ritchie.
