The Midlands Area Point-to-Point season opens on Sunday with the Midlands Area Club meeting at Thorpe Lodge.
There are a total of 162 entries for the seven races, 50 of which are in the final race, the NFU Open
Maiden.
Racegoers may get the chance to see top amateur rider Sam Waley-Cohen
in action. The Cheltenham Gold Cup winning rider, who recently won the King
George Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day with Long Run, has two possible
mounts in the Lincolnshire Meat Company Men’s Open race.
Rumbavu won the Restricted race at this meeting last year and subsequently progressed into
Open company. This horse has already been out this season having finished
second at Ampton last Sunday. Waley-Cohen may instead choose to partner
the classy Roulez Cool who finished second behind Cloudy Lane in the John
Smith’s Foxhunter Chase at Aintree last April.
The other feature race, the AGA Ladies Open race, is a qualifier for the
AGA Ladies Open Point-to-Point Championship Final at Stratford in June. Sagalyrique, a three time Ladies Open winner in 2012 for Angela Rucker, may take some beating.
Thorpe Lodge (NG23 5PY) is situated four miles south west of Newark, near the A46 and
five miles from the A1. Admission is £10 per person with
children under 16 free. First race is at 11.30am.
