Ropsley Fox are through to the last four of the Lincolnshire County Cup after beating DMS FC of Immingham near Grimsby 3-1.
More than 100 spectators watched the game and were treated to a magnificent goal from Barry Payne.
The home side started the better and put the visitors on the back foot straight from the off. Their pressure told as Andy Glencross pounced on a loose ball to finish nicely into the bottom corner.
There were chances at either end but two superb saves by Grant Davies accompanied by defensive duo Billy Stubbs and man of the match Scott Spearink helped keep the score unchanged till the half.
It was a cagey start to the second half that saw DMS take a hold on the game and the visitors capitilised on some indecision in the Foxes box to make it 1-1.
This seemed to ignite the Foxes and they went in search of a winner. A long throw from Joe Clarke was only partly cleared and Barry Payne struck a ferocious half volley from fully 30 yards that smashed the underside of the bar on its way into the net.
A goal worthy to win any game.
As tiredness became a factor late on the game was a bit more stretched but full-backs John Currall and Lewis Watson ensured the lively wingers from DMS were kept at bay.
Tough tackling by substitute Danny Winters coupled with the creativity of Liam Warner led to fellow substitute Alex Robinson racing through on goal and the youngster didn’t disappoint as he rifled the ball into the top corner to ease a few nerves.
The deadly strikeforce of Stephen Young and Nick Hardy had given the DMS defence a torrid time all game and this ensured Ropsley progressed to the semi finals where they will play Cleethorpes Town away on Sunday February 3.
