Staff at Grantham Hospital have been pedalling their way towards a new portable ultrasound machine for the hospital.

On Wednesday, members of staff from the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU) raised £556.55 by cycling on static bikes in Asda.

The machine will be used to scan patients that need to have fluid removed from their chest or stomach.

Staff nurse Steph Askew said: “Its the first time we have held an event like this and the support from the public has been fantastic.

“We would like to thank all the staff from the hospital who came to take part on the day, Asda, who kindly allowed us to hold the event in their store, RAF Cranwell, who provided a bike, and Grantham Electricals, who helped us to set up the event.”

Staff have already raised £2,300 from cake stalls and a donation made by a grateful family, and are getting close to their target of £3,000.

The new machine will mean faster treatment and relief for some patients, as trained staff will be able to perform simple scans on the admissions ward rather than having to wait for a free space in the X-ray department.

Sister Rachel Ryder said: “I have been so touched by the many local people, charity groups and businesses who have come forward to support our fund-raising efforts.”
