The first thing you notice when you walk into The White Lion in Colsterworth is the friendly greeting from the staff behind the bar.
On a cold Monday night it was the perfect way to be welcomed to the pub, which had a lovely log fire roaring.
After getting a drink we chose to sit in the bar area and looked at the menu.
I was surprised by the range of options. There was everything from fishfinger baguette to fillet steak. The only thing that I felt was maybe lacking were fish choices, although there were fish and chips and scampi.
But the variety did not end at the menu, there was also a specials board, which had about four extra choices.
We decided to have two courses and for starter I selected the homemade breaded Brie wedges with warm cranberry sauce.
When the dish arrived there were two large slices of the cheese swimming in a cranberry sauce. It was really well cooked and tasty. The richness of the gooey cheese went wonderfully with the ample amount of sauce.
My partner, Tom, chose the nachos with a trio of dips from the starter/snack menu.
A massive bowl of nachos arrived covered in melted cheese. It was definitely a dish to share. He really enjoyed them but I think, like most people would, he struggled to get anywhere close to finishing them.
The waiter did not rush us but we did not have to wait for long before the main course arrived - again served with a smile and polite questions to check we did not need anything more.
For main I had the roast butternut squash and spinach lasagne, which was served with a large, fresh salad.
The lasagne was served in a large bowl and it was nice with the flavours of the vegetables, but I personally would have preferred a little more sauce.
The salad looked very impressive with a whole host of different colours and it was so fresh. It went wonderfully with the pasta dish.
Tom asked for the ham, egg and chips but unfortunately they had sold out so he opted for the all day breakfast, which was again a large serving with chips, sausages, mushrooms, bacon, eggs, tomato and toast. He said it was very nice, although he felt the chips were a little over done, not burnt, but very crispy.
Overall it was good pub food, it may be lacking a little luxury but you would never go hungry. And with the price of around £7 for each main course it certainly was good value.
